Tuesday 20th April 2021 – IF THIS POSTING …

… finishes rather abruptly, what has happened is that the football has finished and I’ve gone straight to bed.

As I’m typing this out on the portable travelling laptop I’m actually watching the football tonight on the big office machine. Connah’s Quay Nomads v Bala Town in the Welsh Premier League – an important match that Connah’s Quay must absolutely win.

And as soon as it’s over I’m off to bed. The alarms are set for … gulp … 04:30 in the morning and I’m not looking forward to that at all.

This morning I was up once more for the first alarm and after the medication I had a few things to do, amongst which was to sort out my papers that are getting into a mess.

Armed with a mug of coffee I attacked the Welsh revision for a couple of hours – a spell of concentration that totally surprised me.

With my hot chocolate and last slice of sourdough fruit loaf I went for my lesson. To my surprise it all went rather well although I’m still struggling to get to grips with the basics. I’m going to have to go back to the beginning and start again, I reckon.

It’s quite strange really. I can remember some surprising things but I’m totally at sea with some of the easy stuff.

After lunch and a little … errr … relax I spent a little time editing the photos from August 2019 and Wyoming, and then went for my afternoon walk, rather later than usual.

people on beach rue du nord Granville Manche Normandy France Eric HallAs usual, I strolled off down to the edge of the car park to look down over the wall towards the beach so that I could see what was going on down there.

There weren’t so many people down there today, something that probably bears some relationship to the fact that it’s a weekday today.

Had it been weekend there would have been hordes of people down there because we were having one of the nicest days of the year so far. There wasn’t very much wind to talk about today and with few clouds in the sky it was quite warm outside, compared to how it has been for the last few days.

It seems that the local council is doing its stuff this afternoon, with someone out there attending to the vegetation (I’m not sure why I almost typed “devastation” there – a Freudian slip perhaps?). He was cutting off the old dead branches from the bushes and throwing them into the back of his pick-up.

As I went past he stepped into the cab and set off to drive, almost squidging me underneath his wheels. Obviously my fame has spread to this neck of the woods. And when I mentioned to a friend that I had almost been squidged by a motor vehicle she expressed her regret.

From the lawn and underneath the wheels of the pickup I followed the crowds, walking along the path and across the car park to the end of the headland to see what there was going out in the Baie de Mont St Michel.

And right inshore close to the headland was this little cabin cruiser going past my viewpoint. It wasn’t difficult to guess what they were up to. The fishing net standing upright in the stern gave away the game.

But what was interesting me was whereabouts they were actually going to fish. They don’t seem to have too much luck too close to shore, as regular readers of this rubbish will recall.

Every now and again the fishing boats from the port put in an appearance in the bay and regular readers of this rubbish will recall that last week they were out there in force. They all disappeared when that military vessel put in an appearance, but now that’s gone the boats are back there again.

There’s one of them there that I could see, and there may have been more. But there was so much haze on the water this afternoon that I couldn’t see very much and very far. The whole of the Brittany coast was shrouded in the stuff this afternoon.

Over the last few days we’ve been seeing various combinations of Joly France boats and the little freighter Chausiais moored over at the ferry terminal, but today we have the lot. All three of them are over there today moored at the terminal so that must mean that they are quite busy.

What wasn’t very busy though was the chantier navale. There were just the two – Aztec Lady and Anakena remaining from the rush over the last couple of weeks but no-one else had come in to join them over the last 24 hours.

For a start, there were those two people down there dragging that little boat out there with them across the mud. They are probably trying to reach one of the boats that’s moored up further out on the harbour where the tide has already reached, and so they’ll need the boat for the final 20 metres or so where the water is too deep to wade.

But they really are making heavy weather of the stretch across the mud though. They would probably be better off carrying it to the water’s edge and then going back for whatever there is in there.

And once more, we have a couple of fishing boats tied up and abandoned at the quay near the Fish Processing Plant. They’ve been there for a few days now showing no sign of moving.

It’s the little Jersey freighter Normandy Trader, come into port to take away a load of supplies. We don’t see too much of her these days because one of the Brexit bonuses is that she’s obliged to go into St Malo to unload the shellfish that she carries for the Jersey Fishermen’s Co-operative.

The shellfish need to have a health certificate before they can be landed and there’s no Health Inspector here in Granville as yet.

There’s no Customs Inspector either for the freight as yet, although there is talk that there might be one in the town pretty soon to deal with the port traffic and the airport landings. Planes from the Channel Islands have to fly elsewhere at the moment where there are customs and immigration facilities.

Back here afterwards I had a shower and shock! Horror! I cut my hair too. I’m actually looking a little more respectable now.

Most of the guitar practice was spent either working out the bass line to “China Grove” or else the chords to Steam’s “Nah Nah Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” and Donnie Elpert’s “Little Piece of Leather” – not usually the kind of song that you would expect, but I have a cunning plan …

For tea I had another helping of curry with rice and veg followed by some apple pie out of the freezer. That took me up to the football.

It was quite a fierce struggle too with the Nomads needing to win. And at half-time with it being a stalemate, Andy Morrison threw caution to the winds, took off a defender and a midfielder and threw on two attackers, changing from a 4-3-2-1 formation to an out-and-out attacking formation.

And later on with the score still 0-0 he took off yet another defender and brought on another attacker.

In the final stages of the game it was all-out attack from the Nomads with big centre-half George Horan playing up front as a striker as well.

And it all paid dividends when with just minutes to go, a shot through a crowded penalty area from a Nomads player took a wicked deflection into the back of the Bala net. And three minutes later as the game was ticking over into injury time George Horan rose highest to a cross into the area to thunder home a powerful header.

So having downloaded onto my memory stick the necessary files that I need to add to the portable laptop, I’m off to bed, fully-clothed, ready for my alarm all at 04:30 and my train at 05:55 if I make it there with this early start.

Friday 12th February 2021 – WE HAD VISITORS …

And how I regret that they weren’t loaded with paratroopers because how I would have loved to have said that they just “dropped in for a chat”!

Regular readers of this rubbish will recall that where I used to live in the Auvergne I was right underneath the flight path for the French Air Force’s training flights and we had all kinds of aircraft flying by overhead. We even had the Stealth Bombers fly overhead when they were bombing Belgrade, as some of the older readers of this rubbish in one of its many previous existences might recall, including that famous night when I counted 12 flying out out but only 11 flying back.

But since I’ve been living here, the sighting of a French military aeroplane has been a very rare event.

When I went out for my afternoon walk around the headland I noticed down there in the harbour our old friend Normandy Trader. She’s come in to take away another load for transport back to the Channel Islands.

Stop me if you’ve heard this already but you might remember the other week that I told you that she’s been putting into St Malo to unload sometimes and then coming light over here to pick up her load to go back. I was intrigued by this, as you might remember, so I made “certain enquiries”.

It turns out that it’s to do with the shellfish that she brings in from the Jersey Fishermen’s Co-operative or whatever it’s called. Since Brexit, that can’t be landed just anywhere – it needs to be landed at a place where there’s a Health Inspector who can issue the correct certificates.

Be that as it may, I didn’t land just anywhere today. Or at any time either. I actually managed to beat the third alarm once again – that’s every day this week and isn’t it a long time since that has happened?

There was nothing on the dictaphone which was a shame because I do vaguely remember being out and about somewhere during the night, although I have no idea now where that might have been.

And so after the medication I had some time to spend to edit some more photos from July 2019 in order to ease myself into work. I’ve done about 100 this week – 20 a day which isn’t enough unfortunately. There’s still about 700 to do for July 2019 and then I have about 2800 to do for August, not to mention September and October.

This is going to be a long, looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong job.

Having woken myself up, I then dealt with the radio programme for which I had been asked to give some help. That involved searching through all of my music, choosing half a dozen or so tracks and then writing a report as to why those tracks are appropriate for this radio programme that someone is making.

After lunch, and more of my nice fresh bread, I found myself …. errr … drifting away, but I managed to stop myself before I’d gone too far. After I’d pulled myself together (which is more difficult than you might imagine because I’ve been falling apart at the seams for ages) I attacked my Oradour notes.

But for some reason that I don’t understand, I don’t seem to have made much headway. It’s possibly due to the fact that I managed to tease my way into a newspaper archive that had tons of information about more recent developments there, including a spat between Nicolas Sarkozy and Francois Hollande that seems to have slipped in under the radar. I spent an age wading my way through that lot.

There were crowds of people out there today, down on the beach enjoying themselves. And I didn’t realise it at the time but the person in blue centre-right in the image is the woman who lives in the apartment above mine.

On the way back into the building after my stroll, we collided in the entrance hall of the building. She’d been out “to take the air” with a friend of hers and had engaged, without a great deal of success, in the Peche à pied. It’s not really the right kind of tide for that at the moment.

The first photo I had “shot from the hip” as they had taken me by surprise, flying low over the College Malraux. There was much more time to take a photo as they flew along the coast. For a moment I thought that they were going to put down at the airport here but instead they lumbered slowly on inland.

The general consensus of opinion is that they would be heading for Cherbourg, but I would have expected them to have continued along the coast and gone that way rather than heading off inland.

Despite the lack of school transport even today (how would these people manage in the Auvergne) there are still plenty of school children about and this afternoon there was a pile of brats down there on the beach, paying no attention whatever to the teacher who was bellowing instructions to them.

The paths are much more clear of snow so I could carry on along the path in relative ease and go out across to the end of the headland and see what was going on. But with the tide well out, there were no trawlers cruising idly around just offshore right now.

joly france port de Granville harbour Manche Normandy France Eric HallThere was something right out at sea just heading out of the harbour at the Ile de Chausey and I wondered what it was. The NIKON 1 J5 doesn’t have the range of the big NIKON D500

But when I made it round to the viewpoint overlooking the inner harbour, I could see Joly France over there at the ferry terminal in its NAABSA (Not Always Afloat But Safely Aground) position, but there was no sign of the little freighter Chausiais. That may well be who it was who was heading for home.

It was about time that I was heading for home too and my hot coffee as I was quite cold by now. Two pairs of trousers is a good move but everything else is frozen in all of this.

After I finished work I had an hour on the guitars that wasn’t really all that impressive and then I went for tea. I ended up with past and veg with bulghour in a vegan cheese sauce. And there was nothing wrong with that. The last of the rice pudding has gone so I’m going to have to defrost some apple pie for tomorrow night’s pudding.

So off to bed now, nice and early. Shopping tomorrow and I have to book my journey to Leuven too. It’s surprising just how quickly the time comes round these days. I can’t keep up with it.

Thursday 17th December 2020 – WHAT A HORRIBLE …

… day I’ve had today.

And it all went wrong rght at the start when I missed the third alarm. And missed it by a good 35 minutes too which is extremely disappointed. It wasn’t as if I had had a late night last night either. I was actually in bed at about 23:30 which is early for me these days.

And so there I was, late again. I hauled myself off (eventually) into the kitchen for my medication and morning kefir. Kiwi kefir, which was my favourite until I discovered that clementines work well in it too (note to self – “buy more clementines”.

We were out somewhere driving last night and we got to Liège on the motorway – we’d been driving on the left as in the UK down a steep bank and everyone was going past me but I thought that when we reach the hill back up on the other side I’ll catch up with them because I had the cruise control set which will carry me on as they slow down – but we had to come off at Liège for some reason at the exit, down the slip road and turn left because the central reservation was closed off and it took us up to the Liège by-pass and we expected to be able to double back and return to the motorway again there. But apparently not. There were riot police and barbed wire all over the place. It turned out that there was a football match taking place in Liège that night between Standard Liège and some European opponent. I thought “this is some extreme to go to because of this football match” we had to inch our way along the ring road until we could arrive at the next junction. Someone else in the queue at the traffic lights to whom I was chatting counted that there were 7 sets of traffic lights between where we were and that next junction. While we were inching our way along, someone in a red Cortina S registered estate drove out of a side alley. Admittedly he was going slowly and it was impossible to see but it took me completely by surprise and nearly hit it. Then I ended up back at the EU and they were proposing a judo class so I went along to the opening lesson. There was a guy there interviewing all of the people there who wanted to join, asking about their experience. Of course with being the last to arrive they kept me until last. Then they came over to me, asked my name and what I did. I replied “as little as possible, like everyone else”. He gave me one of these tired, worn-out looks and went over to the computer screen to look up my details. I thought “if he wanted my details he should have asked for that instead of asking a silly question”. He started to scroll through but couldn’t see my name. I asked “why don’t you type me name on the screen and it will scroll right through to my name”. He replied “it won’t do that”. I said that it had been doing that for 20 years that I know of. He replied that there had been problems with the computer and it doesn’t do that. I had a look at the screen. It was all burnt and mangled, and looked a bit like a relief map of a railway line and a railway station. I was surprised that it was working at all looking like a mess like this

Having transcribed that, which took longer than it might have done, I had half an hour or so on the arrears of work from the summer before going for a shower and getting ready to go out to the shops.

Thora is still here after her adventures last night, and it’s been pretty common knowledge that Normandy Trader is really busy, so it’s no surprise to see her in port this morning.

She set out at about 03:00 so I’m told, so she’s come in on the morning tide and so Thora has had to move off into the gravel-loading bay in order to allow Normandy Trader to moor underneath the crane in order to be unloaded

I struggled up to LIDL though – not quite as bad as the last tie I went, but near enough. And I didn’t buy much today because I didn’t really need anything special. They had those nice multi-coloured AAA batteries on offer so I bought 2 packs to use for the high-quality equipment. And the clementines of course.

citroen saxo tyres marked rue st paul Granville Manche Normandy France Eric HallThe way home usually brings me down the Ru St Paul and for the past however many months there’s been a Citroen Saxo parked here. One of its windows is broken and it looks pretty much abandoned to me.

And it seems that the local council has noticed too, because since the last time that I was down here they have tagged the tyres and the road where she’s parked. The intention would seem to be to come back in after a reasonable period of time to check whether or not she has moved at all.

And if not, she’ll be taken away for disposal, I imagine.

But this tagging is interesting. In the old days the officials would note in their notebooks the position of the tyre valves in order to determine if a vehicle had or hadn’t moved. I suppose that there’s only me these days who still goes around with a notebook

Back here after a slow, weary crawl up the hill (noticing that Normandy Trader has already cleared off and that was a rapid turn-round, wasn’t it) I made myself a hot chocolate and cut myself a slice of fruit bread. And this is when I started to have problems because after about half an hour or so, no matter how many things I had to do, I crashed out completely.

And I DO mean “completely” too. It was 14:09 when I next glanced at the time – about 2.5 hours after I’d sat down. And it took me another half-hour to summon up the strength to leave the chair in search of food. You’ve no idea just how depressing that was today on top of the really bad start to the day.

But at least after lunch I managed to fit Caliburn’s new battery and he starts perfectly now too. He’s in need of a good run-out though so we might go for a little trip out on Saturday if I’m feeling up to it.

And neither did anyone else by the looks of things, that’s all I can say because it’s been a long time since I’ve seen the paths as crowded as they were today. Even down on the beach there were hordes of people moving around in the beautiful sunshine enjoying what may well be the last of the good weather.

And at the top of the photo towards the right you’ll notice a bright yellow buoy of some description. I’d be surprised if it were a lobster pot, so close into the shore at low tide, but who knows what it might be?

Threading my way through the throngs, I walked on along the footpath. Nothing else happening here so I walked across the lawn and the car park to the headland.

And it seems that we have a new tenant in there today. But it’s nothing to get excited about unfortunately. It’s only a very small cabin cruiser-type of boat and I don’t imagine that it’s going to be in there for very long, or that it will need all that much attention either.

We could do with a return to the heady days of late summer when we had as many as 9 of the largest types of boat in there receiving attention and there wasn’t room in there to swing a cat.

But interestingly, we saw in this morning’s photo that there was an articulated lorry pulling a trailer on which were two old shabby sea containers. The lorry and trailer have gone, but the sea containers are now on the quayside right by Thora. I wonder if she’s going to be taking them with her when she goes.

As for me, I must be going too. A nice hot coffee awaits me and I can’t say that I don’t need it. I need something to bring me to my senses, such as they are.

Back here, I did week 2 of my Welsh homework and then carried on with the arrears of work, making very little progress unfortunately. I just can’t seem to fire up the energy.

There was the hour on the guitars of course, which was quite enjoyable, except that I forgot my bass line to “Street Fighting Man” and that was disappointing. too. It’s not a very good day

In accordance with new procedures, it was time for me to go for my evening run about.

fishing boats english channel Granville Manche Normandy France Eric HallYou might have seen in the previous photos for earlier today that the tidal port was quite empty. There was hardly a fishing boat to be seen. And in case you are wondering where they all went, they are here.

In this photo I counted 12 fishing boats on their way back home now that the tide is a-cumen in. And there were probably just as many that didn’t make it into the frame as well.

What’s happening, I reckon, is that they are all out there catching what they can before the curtain comes down on fishing in the Bay on 31st December.

And while we’re on this subject, I heard the report of the meeting that took place the other day between the local fishermen. Basically, they have agreed that if they are restricted from the fishing grounds that were agreed under the Treaty of the Bay of Granville in 1836, then no British fishing boat will be allowed to land its catch in France.

This will complicate matters for our two coastal freighters, particularly Normandy Trader which is chartered by the Co-operative of Jersey Fishermen to bring their catch into Granville.

But I’m just surprised that they didn’t propose to cut the underwater cable that provides the Channel Islands with electricity. All of their electricity comes from here, and my way of thinking is that if they want to cut themselves off from Europe and from their obligations, then they can do, but that’s the kind of thing that works both ways.

donville les bains Granville Manche Normandy France Eric HallFrom the viewpoint in the Rue du Nord I ran off down the road until my next rest point. And I’m slowly pushing it a little further up the steep hill that’s there.

Regular readers of this rubbish will recall that very occasionally we have seen some very bright lights at the back of Donville les Bains, and we’ve been wondering what they might be. They were there again tonight so I took a photo o that I might have a closer look when I returned home, but nothing evident showed itself

The football ground is in that general direction, but when I was there, I don’t recall it having floodlights

christmas lights rue paul poirier Granville Manche Normandy France Eric HallThe next two legs of my run have changed a little. In view of the floods on the footpath I now go along the road and down the steps half-way along near the Place de l’Isthme

There wasn’t anything going on around here so I wandered over to the side. The Christmas lights in the Rue Paul Poirier were looking really good tonight. Both of the big green crosses for the chemists in the street were flashing away but as my first photo of it didn’t work too well I deleted it and went to take another.

And just as I clicked the shutter, not one but BOTH of the lights were switched off. 19:30 bang on the button. Closing time, I reckon.

crescent moon Granville Manche Normandy France Eric HallFrom there I ran off across the Square Maurice Marland, straight intothe teeth of a roaring gale. I don’t know what had happened but the wind has suddenly picked up.

But as I walked up the ramp at the far end, this was far too good an opportunity to miss. the winds had blown away all of the clouds and this beautiful little sliver of a crescent moon appeared through the trees. It’s not really worked out unfortunately but never mind.

And if you look tothe left of the photograph, you’ll see the ramp that leads up to the viewpoint here that overlooks the port.

And I was treated to another beautiful display of nautical danse macabres as a little freighter steamed … “dieseled” – ed … into port with all of its lights ablaze. At first I thought that it was Normandy Trader either forgotten something or else she’s dome a most amazingly rapid turnround back in St Helier.

But not even Normandy Trader can turn round that quickly. It is in fact Chausiais who now wants a go at the loading crane, but she’s not going to be having that for a while.

thora marité port de Granville harbour Manche Normandy France Eric HallAnd the reason for this is that, surprisingly, Thora is still in port next to Marité. She seems to be taking her time getting in and out these days.

So I watched the procedure for a few minutes and then headed home.

As you saw at the beginning, just after I moved away Marité slipped her moorings and headed off out into the open sea on her way home again and Chausiais slid into the vacant berth.

having put my tea in the oven before I set out, I came back home to hot pie and baled potatoes with veg and gravy followed by rice pudding. Fresh sprouts were on the menu today, and with some steamed frozen broccoli it was all totally delicious.

Now that I’ve written up my notes, I’m off to bed. later than I intended, but that’s how things are these days.

There’s plenty of work to do tomorrow, a few ‘phone calls to make and that sort of thing, and then of course the arrears to attend to. So here’s hoping for a better day tomorrow than I did today. It was all quite depressing what with one thig and another.

But I am noticing little deteriorations in my health here and there. People with this illness have already died during the length of time that I have had it, and while I’m being very careful about what I do, who I meet and what I eat, and about keeping fit, I can’t go on for ever.

We’ll see what the future brings to me.

Wednesday 26th February 2020 – I’VE HAD VISITORS …

… today.

Or, rather, one visitor. The person who is responsible for this radio shambles came to see me this afternoon about the e-mail that I had sent him on Monday evening.

And basically, I told him about my take on the events of this weekend and, for good measure, all of the things that I’ve been telling the regular readers of this rubbish ever since last November.

Anyway, he’s gone away to mull over the things that I mentioned.

The irony is that of everything that went wrong, it could all without exception have been prevented and would never have happened had they been willing to listen to advice right from the very start.

Simple things, like “we had no contact” because one particular mobile phone network doesn’t reach to where the control was. The idea of swapping phones over so that the person at the control had the phone that worked in there and those in the street had the others went totally over their heads.

All stupid little things like that which destroyed the broadcast.

Anyway, I promised that I wouldn’t mention anything, so I won’t. But it remains to be seen whether things change and whether he has the courage to confront the major issue.

But to my surprise, I’m not alone either. By pure coincidence the other two people who were implicated in this affair as “victims” (as opposed to “perpetrators” of the actions) had been in touch with him and told him pretty much the same thing that I told him too.

As for me, I had a late morning this morning. It was 07:00 when I finally crawled out of bed and had my medication. That’s already 45 minutes of my day lost before I begin.

After the medication I looked at the dictaphone but for once it had been a quiet night and I hadn’t gone anywhere. Ahh well!

Instead I spent much of the morning splitting up some digital sound files into their individual tracks. It was another one of those “all mixed up” days with tracks in any kind of order.

Furthermore, two of the albums weren’t from digital masters and were so deformed that no effects function that I had could restore them. In the end I had to search even further to track down a better copy of each.

Round about 11:00 I called it a day and headed off towards town and La Mie Caline for my dejeunette.

It was too far away for me to identify properly so I took a hopeful photo with the aim of blowing it up (the photo, not the object) when I returned home to see what it was.

And actually it’s nothing really exciting. Merely Joly France on one of her ferry trips out to the Ile de Chausey.

But even so, it must have been powerful out in the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean because the seas were roaring in. The harbour gates are still open, which means that high tide is at least two hours away but even so the waves are crashing up to and in some cases right over the harbour walls.

The energy that there must be in those waves, just waiting to be harvested instead of using coal, gas, oil and nuclear.

normandy trader port de granville harbour manche normandy france eric hallThe tide was out, as I mentioned, so the harbour gates were closed and I could take the path over the top to the other side.

As I crossed over the top of the gates, I could see that one of our regular visitors is back again. Normandy Trader is sitting at the quayside over there underneath the unloading crane.

She must have sneaked in on the early morning tide while I was asleep, I reckon. Whatever blockade there might have been of the Channel Islands ships, it’s clearly over.

post pontoon port de granville harbour manche normandy france eric hallRegular readers of this rubbish will recall that yesterday I mentioned the large grey post that had appeared at the quayside across by the rue du Port.

The big floating pontoon was back over on this side of the harbour so there was a very good view of what they had been fitting.

And so even though I’m better-informed, I’m still none-the-wiser. I shall have to make further enquiries. But at least you can see the new pontoons that they’ve been fixing.

shellfish normandy trader port de granville harbour manche normandy france eric hallThere are things that I need to discuss with the skipper of Normandy Trader and also with the skipper of Thora, the other Jersey freighter.

And so I took myself off over there for a chat. I stopped on the way round though to look at all of the shelfish that they had been unloading. Normandy Trader works for, amongst other customers, the Jersey Fishermen’s Co-Operative and brings in the catch for the buyers here.

It’s one thing that the silly Brits have forgotten. There’s very little market for shellfish and the like in the Uk but that’s the predominant catch in inshore fisheries there.

However, there’s a huge market for it on the Mainland and that’s where most of it ends up. The British fishermen need the European market to sell their catch and the imposition of tariffs will kill the trade stone-dead.

We saw earlier this month how the Channel Islands were brought to their knees after just 4 days of boycott.

pontoon mounting brackets port de granville harbour manche normandy france eric hallThe skipper of Normandy Trader wasn’t about. In fact the whole ship had the air of the Marie Celeste about it.

Disappointed yet again, I pushed on … “pushed off, more like” – ed … to La Mie Caline where my path was interrupted by this rather large lorry trying to squeeze its way in between the fairground vehicles and the parked cars.

One thing that i’ve noticed is that the pontoon mounting brackets are now starting to be affixed on this side of the harbour wall too, and here are a couple more making their way onto the construction site.

Plenty of time before lunch so I dictated the notes for Project 027, uploaded them to the computer and began to edit them.

Not that I managed to go very far because I stopped for lunch – and then there was my visitor for the afternoon.

Basically, I vented my spleen – or, rather, I would have done had I still had my spleen – for a good 95 minutes (I timed it) but unfortunately it didn’t make me feel any better.

After he had left I carried on with the editing and managed to turn 10:24 minutes into just 7:10, which is always good.

But when I played it back, there was a horrible noise. Somehow I’d made an unconscious manoeuvre of some control or other and it had distorted the sound.

Had I known what I had done I might have been able to reverse it and restore the sound but in the end I had to redo it.

Regular readers of this rubbish will recall that buoys pop up every now and again in the sea around here, and there was another one out there today. I still haven’t worked out what their purpose is though.

There were plenty of people around today so I wasn’t able to fit in very much in the way of a run. The way that I run these days is quite embarrassing and I’d rather not be observed.

The radio project is now complete and ready to go (in about 3 months time) but I didn’t have time to finish a “live concert”. Mind you, I’ve had plenty of tile to think about things and I known now what i’m going to do if none of the irons that I have in the fire come up trumps this time round.

No harm in preparing something and being well ahead.

Because tea was late, I had an aubergine and kidney-bean whatsit with pasta and vegetables followed by the last of the rice pudding. It won’t be long before I have to start cooking mega-curries again. The pile in the freezer is diminishing.

There was a really cold wind out there but the skies were clear and you could see for miles. This trawler here right out in the English Channel stood out really well and the photo hasn’t come out too badly considering the distance at which it was taken.

But at least, after the wicked storms that we have had just recently, they’ve been able to go back to work.

It subsequently occurred to me that I don’t remember taking one of the same view in the dark. So seeing as I was going that way this evening, I duly obliged.

As you can (or can’t) see, it’s nothing whatever to write home about. But I suppose that it’s something for posterity.

And as I rounded the headland I saw this bright light heading my way. The fishing boats aren’t merely just coming into harbour, there are others heading out to sea too at the same time.

This is another photo that could have been much worse that it actually is, but I’m clearly in need of much more practice at shooting in the dark if I want to do anything special.

Yesterday we managed to make it up to three fishing boats, but this evening we’re back down to two again. So it’s all go in the shipyard.

It wasn’t all go though on my little running route. Far too many people about, as well as two cats squaring up to each other.

And so I continued my walk to another one of my reserve courses and had a good run along there instead. Must keep going as much as I can.

So bed-time now once the good music stops. Shops tomorrow, do the text for this live broadcast and then spend the rest of the week attacking the arrears of work.

Thursday 13th February 2020 – LIDL IN GRANVILLE …

soya steaks LIDL granville manche normandy france eric hall… is slowly dragging itself into the 21st Century at long last.

Over the past year or so its BIO range has slowly been expanding and there have occasionally been things there that I can eat, but today, the freezer has been restocked and there are now not only vegetarian frozen foods but even a (very small) vegan selection.

And that’s god news for me and even though i’m struggling for space in my freezer, I bought a box, on the grounds that if no-one buys it, they won’t stock it.

Yes, I made it to LIDL this morning although I’m not quite sure how because I was feeling really dreadful. Last night I slept right the way through the alarms and it was 07:35 when I hauled myself out of bed eventually.

And to say that I wasn’t feeling at all like it is an understatement. Looking back on what I wrote last night before I went to bed, then nothing whatever had changed.

It was preying on my mind too during my sleep (such as it was) by the look of things. After the medication I struggled back to the desk to check the dictaphone. It had taken me ages to go off to sleep but I went back on board The Good Ship Ve … errr … Ocean Endeavour and there was a party type of thing that we were having and a group of people – the organisers – got up and did a song that involved banjos and guitars and a bass. It was really good – they were all disguised as Mexicans. I dashed in with my camera to take a photo but I couldn’t remember how to set the settings on it to get the photo that I wanted because they were standing right by an open window where the sun was streaming in so I wanted to play around with the settings but I couldn’t remember how to do it and it was the subsequent panic attack that awoke me, about 30 seconds after I’d gone to sleep.

And the first thing that I noticed was that the wind was back after its day off yesterday. And back in spades too. The port gates can’t have been opened long so the tide still has about 90 minutes before it’s full but even so it was still looking very impressive.

The waves were hurling themselves with all of their might against the sea wall and some were going over the top.

For the first time in well over a week, Normandy Trader had turned up in harbour. The blockade of Channel Island ships has ended of course with Guernsey’s capitulation (in four days!) and Normandy Trader, which brings in the shellfish from the Jersey Fisherman’s Co-operative, can now come into port.

But for how long remains to be seen.

crane pontoon port de granville harbour manche normandy france eric hallregular readers of this rubbish will recall that we’ve been following the antics of the workmen down in the port and the gradual assembly of the big pontoon.

A large crane turned up yesterday too, and now it seems that it has been taken out onto the pontoon.

But for what, I have no idea. I can’t think what they would need something like that for in a harbour like this – unless it’s to act as a counterbalance for the crane on the quayside as it lowers the new walkways into the water.

Even so, that’s using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

There’s now another mobile crane turned up in the rue du Port where they have been fitting the mounting brackets for the pontoon walkway on that side, so it looks as if they are almost ready to start there too.

This is all going to be extremely interesting over the next few weeks or so and I hope that I’ll be here to see it.

After something of a struggle I made it to LIDL where I forgot the mushrooms, but it was an expensive shop there today and for a good reason too. The largest saucepan that I have here is a 20cm one with a capacity of 2.5 litres and for what i’m doing now with making soups and drinks and also freezing carrots, it’s just not big enough.

On Monday I noticed that they had nig saucepans in on offer but I couldn’t bring one home. Today though, I was prepared with a large carry-bag and a 24cm 5.5 litre saucepan is now sitting in my kitchen.

That’s even big enough to sterilise all of my jars too.

Regular readers of this rubbish will recall the other day the workman on the roof of that house that they are slowly renovating in the rue des Juifs. They are obviously going quicker than I was reckoning because now they are doing the floors and the concrete pump is here punping the concrete in.

It’s a good job that the local buses here aren’t double-deckers, isn’t it?

We’ve seen Normandy Trader braving the winds to come into port but now it’s the turn of La Grande Ancre to head off for a life on the open waves out there on the open sea.

And good luck to her too. She’s going to need it, a small thing like her out there in waves like that. As I’ve said before … “on many occasions” – ed … my hat comes off to all of those going out there

On the way back I bumped into my neighbour and we had a lengthy chat, buffetted by the wind as we were standing there.

Back here I had a coffee and then started work. And I can safely say that today I didn’t do a single thing that had anything whatever to do with the radio. And I think that this must be the first day since well before Christmas too.

First thing was, due to my late start this morning, to split up a few digital tracks into their component parts. And I’ve given up relying on the official data for cutting the tracks because they are just so hopelessly wrong.

That took me up to lunch time and my butties.

This afternoon I attacked the mountain of paperwork that had accumulated over the past few months. Some of it was quite urgent too so it wasn’t just a case of simply filing it away, I had a few letters and e-mails to write for stuff that I should really have attended to a while ago.

There was a pile of photocopying too that needed doing. All in all, I was still at this by the time that I knocked off for tea and there’s more to do.

But here’s a surprise. I’ve found a document that tells me that I have an employment assurance policy maturing at the end of February that is going to pay me a pension. The only pensions that I know of are my morks pension, my UK and my Belgian State pension (not that these are anything to write home about) and some old pension from when I was in the UK years ago.

So what is this all about? I’ll have to ring up tomorrow to enquire about it because I don’t have a clue. It can’t be anything substantial otherwise I would remember it. But was I in a works pension scheme when I spent that 12 months working for that crazy American company in Brussels?

First and foremost was my afternoon walk. And that was interrupted too by me noticing a couple of guys out in the sea windsurfing. They must be out of their minds in this weather with this wind and these heavy seas and as I prepared the camera, one of them capsized into the sea.

This left the other one to engage with me.

and there it really was wicked. Not as bad as it was earlier in the week but still enough to disrupt almost everything that I was trying to do. The waves were rolling into the Baie de Mont St Michel with quite a considerable force and I reckon that this evening when the tide is in it’s going to be quite dramatic.

So I wish that they would fix up some lights somewhere to make it easy for photography.

dredger digging rocks ferry port de granville harbour manche normandy france eric hallNo change at all in the Chantier navale so I pushed on to see what they were up to at the ferry terminal.

The big tractor and trailer (there are in fact two of them) was heading back out there for another load of stone, with it being low tide. And wedged up in the corner was a concrete-breaker and a large digger.

The breaker breaks it off, the digger picks it up and puts it into the trailer and the tractor drives away the loaded trailer.

But now, mid-afternoon, I have the sun behind me so i can take a much better photo of it too, and with the big NIKON D500 instead of the little NIKON 1. The Nikon 1 is a useful little camera and I take it with me when I go for long walks or go shopping because it’s very lightweight and fits nicely in my pocket

But it’s not up to big panoramic distance shots unfortunately. It’s very good at what it does, but it doesn’t do much.

No idea at al what they are doing but as I said earlier it’s going to be interesting in the next couple of weeks as the story unfolds.

Back here and a coffee and then I tried to carry on work but I crashed out again. And that was a shame because my head had cleared and I was starting to feel a little better

But once I was back awake I carried on and now I have a huge blood blister on my finger where I caught it in the hole puncher.

Tea was a kind-of curry of everything left over – namely the rest of the stuffing with more onion and garlic and, to lengthen it, a good handful of salted peanuts. It was delicious with a tomato sauce, veg and pasta.

And the last of the rice pudding that followed it was equally delicious.

All alone again on my evening walk, and I managed my two runs, even putting an extra 10 metres on them which was quite surprising.

But now it’s bed-time, later than I had hoped but it can’t be helped. Tomorrow I’m going to finish off the paperwork and then start on the photos from my Arctic adventures.

That will be exciting.
