Thursday 7th September 2023 – BY THE TIME …

… that you read this I probably won’t be here.

Well, as regular readers of this rubbish will recall, I’m not all here and I haven’t been all here for quite a while but tomorrow I shall be somewhere else.

What I have been doing today is preparing for my journey. And it’s taking some preparation too.

There is however some good news. You might think that the idea that my neighbour isn’t going to work tomorrow morning so can’t drop me off at the station on her way meant that I’d have to make other plans.

Before I phoned to book a taxi (yes, I really am that ill) I checked the bus times. The bus from outside here doesn’t for some reason that only the dispatcher will know, go into town or near the railway station. I have to change buses.

There are three places where it’s possible to do so and in the past, I’d miss a bus to the station by a couple of minutes. However I checked today and found that they seem to have adjusted the timetable, meaning that I have a 20-minute wait at the port for a connecting bus.

There’s only 15 minutes to leave the bus at the station and board the train before it departs, so I shall have to hurry as best as I can. But it seems to be the most logical way to go to the station.

If ever I had anything to say about it, I’d have a major re-route of the bus network. It defies all understanding that here in the walled city, where the population density is heaviest, the bus doesn’t go to the town centre, the railway station and the hospital, and stops a good few hundred metres away from the largest supermarket.

So be that as it may, I’ve been quite busy today.

last night was rather depressing because I went on several little voyages that completely evaporated out of my mind when I tried to dictate them. My brain is really turning to spaghetti right now.

When the alarm went off I was dead to the world and had something of a scramble to rise to my feet.

After the medication and checking the mails and messages I had a chat with Alison and with Liz on the internet and we had a few things to say to each other. Rosemary also sent me an e-mail to say that the internet was down at her place. The Auvergne is definitely “The Land That Time Forgot”.

First thing that I needed to do is to book my train from Brussels to Leuven. I’m not going to have much time in Brussels to buy a ticket when I arrive and, as regular readers of this rubbish will recall, I’m not as mobile as I used to be.

Once I’d done that, I had to track down all of my paperwork and print it off, and then organise my medical folder. I don’t need the stuff that I took with me to Paris last week.

But it really is a sign of the times that even one unnecessary piece of paper in the backpack makes such a difference in my mobility.

There was the backpack to pack too. And we had a slight catastrophe because I can’t find my box of medical stuff that I take with me. I’ve no idea where that might be. I’ve put it somewhere but I can’t think where.

That’ll teach me a lesson. I’m the world’s worst at organising myself so I have to have a place for everything and everything has to be in its place. And if it isn’t, than I am totally lost.

So now that my bag is packed as much as possible, complete with food to sustain me on my journey, I backed up the computer onto the USB key that I take with me when I travel.

And not having backed up the portable computer since my last trip to Leuven, which was in May, there will be tons of stuff to amend and append when I’m on the train tomorrow morning. A mere 2,338 files, to be precise.

There was even time to finish off sorting out the music for another programme. But I’ve not written any notes for it as yet as I’m going to have several days when I won’t have anything to do so I can catch up with it then.

A little earlier I talked about my nocturnal voyages. We were doing a remake of EL DORADO last night. I was accompanying John Wayne on his travels on his horse. Our version was much better than John Huston’s … "actually Howard Hawks’s" – ed. We did so much more in the film and went into it in much greater depth. It was another one of these that went on for absolutely hours but I ran out of steam while I was in the apartment of the girl who was trying to give him false information. It was nothing like the cabin in which the girl was living – it was an office block in a huge complex and an apartment above the Bank that was there, all modern glass and chrome etc. The person who gave John Wayne his information at the sheriff’s office, which was a huge place with lots of small offices was actually one of his ex-wives. She struck me as being quite a nice woman. But I ran out of steam while we were confronting the woman about the disappearance of the gang that we were trying to hunt down.

There was another long rambling dream, however as I mentioned earlier, I’ve forgotten almost all of it. The interesting thing about it was that we encountered the wife of a friend of mine. Her birthday was 5th September. I had another friend who was also a nurse. Her birthday was also 5th September. I thought that that was the most amazing coincidence.

Later on, there was another dream that I’d forgotten, one in which we encountered the body of a friend of ours in the Stores in a castle. She’d obviously been very unhappy and she’d committed suicide but I can’t remember any more of this.

However a little later I had something of a recollection of a few things relating to that last dream. There was something to do with hire cars. Whole fleets of cars had been hired out by big reputable companies but some were so old – quite a few “G” registration cars there as in the mid-80s. They had been hired out for this event. I was interested to know whether they’d hire them out again but the person concerned with whom I was talking didn’t know. All my colleagues at work were making remarks about the vehicle that I’d hired and about me driving it which I thought was awful but never mind! There was also something involving a bowlful of the dirtiest water you could ever imagine but I don’t now where that fitted in.

Tea tonight was fried rice and vegetables with some of those Chinese whatsits that I bought a while ago. It was a really nice tea too and i’ll have some more of those when I can

Actually I ought to have a think about making them myself. They are basically tofu and vegetables wrapped in some of that brick pastry stuff. I suppose that I could make them like sausage rolls and slice them into smaller lengths.

And that reminds me – I need to think about making my sausage rolls at some point.

Before I finished, I diced the remaining carrots, blanched them and put them in the freezer. There weren’t many of them but it would be a shame to throw them out.

So I’m off to bed, ready for tomorrow. I shall be in a rush so I need to get a move on. And it will be a long, tiring day which won’t end for quite a while. At least I can sleep on the train, if I’m not too busy with those 2,338 files.

Friday 12th February 2021 – WE HAD VISITORS …

french military aircraft pointe du roc Granville Manche Normandy France Eric Hall… this afternoon here in Granville.

And how I regret that they weren’t loaded with paratroopers because how I would have loved to have said that they just “dropped in for a chat”!

Regular readers of this rubbish will recall that where I used to live in the Auvergne I was right underneath the flight path for the French Air Force’s training flights and we had all kinds of aircraft flying by overhead. We even had the Stealth Bombers fly overhead when they were bombing Belgrade, as some of the older readers of this rubbish in one of its many previous existences might recall, including that famous night when I counted 12 flying out out but only 11 flying back.

But since I’ve been living here, the sighting of a French military aeroplane has been a very rare event.

normandy trader port de Granville harbour Manche Normandy France Eric HallAnd the French Military aeroplanes weren’t the only visitors today either.

When I went out for my afternoon walk around the headland I noticed down there in the harbour our old friend Normandy Trader. She’s come in to take away another load for transport back to the Channel Islands.

Stop me if you’ve heard this already but you might remember the other week that I told you that she’s been putting into St Malo to unload sometimes and then coming light over here to pick up her load to go back. I was intrigued by this, as you might remember, so I made “certain enquiries”.

It turns out that it’s to do with the shellfish that she brings in from the Jersey Fishermen’s Co-operative or whatever it’s called. Since Brexit, that can’t be landed just anywhere – it needs to be landed at a place where there’s a Health Inspector who can issue the correct certificates.

Be that as it may, I didn’t land just anywhere today. Or at any time either. I actually managed to beat the third alarm once again – that’s every day this week and isn’t it a long time since that has happened?

There was nothing on the dictaphone which was a shame because I do vaguely remember being out and about somewhere during the night, although I have no idea now where that might have been.

And so after the medication I had some time to spend to edit some more photos from July 2019 in order to ease myself into work. I’ve done about 100 this week – 20 a day which isn’t enough unfortunately. There’s still about 700 to do for July 2019 and then I have about 2800 to do for August, not to mention September and October.

This is going to be a long, looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong job.

Having woken myself up, I then dealt with the radio programme for which I had been asked to give some help. That involved searching through all of my music, choosing half a dozen or so tracks and then writing a report as to why those tracks are appropriate for this radio programme that someone is making.

After lunch, and more of my nice fresh bread, I found myself …. errr … drifting away, but I managed to stop myself before I’d gone too far. After I’d pulled myself together (which is more difficult than you might imagine because I’ve been falling apart at the seams for ages) I attacked my Oradour notes.

But for some reason that I don’t understand, I don’t seem to have made much headway. It’s possibly due to the fact that I managed to tease my way into a newspaper archive that had tons of information about more recent developments there, including a spat between Nicolas Sarkozy and Francois Hollande that seems to have slipped in under the radar. I spent an age wading my way through that lot.

people on beach plat gousset Granville Manche Normandy France Eric HallThere was the usual afternoon walk out in the beautiful sunny weather, even if it was absolutely freezing cold.

There were crowds of people out there today, down on the beach enjoying themselves. And I didn’t realise it at the time but the person in blue centre-right in the image is the woman who lives in the apartment above mine.

On the way back into the building after my stroll, we collided in the entrance hall of the building. She’d been out “to take the air” with a friend of hers and had engaged, without a great deal of success, in the Peche à pied. It’s not really the right kind of tide for that at the moment.

french military aircraft plat gousset Granville Manche Normandy France Eric HallEarlier on at the start of these notes I talked about the French military aircraft.

The first photo I had “shot from the hip” as they had taken me by surprise, flying low over the College Malraux. There was much more time to take a photo as they flew along the coast. For a moment I thought that they were going to put down at the airport here but instead they lumbered slowly on inland.

The general consensus of opinion is that they would be heading for Cherbourg, but I would have expected them to have continued along the coast and gone that way rather than heading off inland.

school children on beach pointe du roc Granville Manche Normandy France Eric HallWith the aircraft now well out of the way, I could turn my attention to the noise coming from the beach.

Despite the lack of school transport even today (how would these people manage in the Auvergne) there are still plenty of school children about and this afternoon there was a pile of brats down there on the beach, paying no attention whatever to the teacher who was bellowing instructions to them.

The paths are much more clear of snow so I could carry on along the path in relative ease and go out across to the end of the headland and see what was going on. But with the tide well out, there were no trawlers cruising idly around just offshore right now.

joly france port de Granville harbour Manche Normandy France Eric HallThere was something right out at sea just heading out of the harbour at the Ile de Chausey and I wondered what it was. The NIKON 1 J5 doesn’t have the range of the big NIKON D500

But when I made it round to the viewpoint overlooking the inner harbour, I could see Joly France over there at the ferry terminal in its NAABSA (Not Always Afloat But Safely Aground) position, but there was no sign of the little freighter Chausiais. That may well be who it was who was heading for home.

It was about time that I was heading for home too and my hot coffee as I was quite cold by now. Two pairs of trousers is a good move but everything else is frozen in all of this.

After I finished work I had an hour on the guitars that wasn’t really all that impressive and then I went for tea. I ended up with past and veg with bulghour in a vegan cheese sauce. And there was nothing wrong with that. The last of the rice pudding has gone so I’m going to have to defrost some apple pie for tomorrow night’s pudding.

So off to bed now, nice and early. Shopping tomorrow and I have to book my journey to Leuven too. It’s surprising just how quickly the time comes round these days. I can’t keep up with it.

Friday 10th November 2017 – I’VE BURNT …

… myself today.

Sitting on the sofa with a full mug of boiling hot coffee and I fell asleep. As a result I dropped the top two inches down my front and it didn’t half hurt.

Last night I’d had yet another good sleep and I managed to get up at the appropriate time too. It was warm in here too – 15°C on the thermometer so I turned off the heating. I don’t need it on in this kind of weather.

After breakfast I had a shower, a shave and a change of clothes so that I look pretty, and then set about paying for my web hosting – the renewal of which is today. And that took, intermittently, the whole day.

And that reminds me. MY web hosting isn’t cheap, but it’s good value when you consider all of the information that’s contained on it. And if you want to help me defray my expenses so I can keep up the good work, you can use the links on the side bar to access Amazon to make your next purchase. Your purchase will cost you the same price, but I receive a small commission.

Once I’d organised the web host (or, at least, I hoped that I had) I braved the rainstorm and went out to the shops. Mind you, I needn’t have bothered because they are in fact opened tomorrow.

LIDL and LeClerc were where I went and I didn’t buy anything out of the ordinary. I’m on an economy drive as you know. But I did find some bread buns at €0.28 each so I bought two and stuck them in the freezer.

As you know, I have some vegan burgers that we made the other day and I’ll try to sort out a proper burger arrangement with mustard, salad and cheese. It’s been years since I’ve done that.

I also called at the Chemists to pick up something for my cold, flu and sore throat. But here’s a problem. Some of the medication that I am obliged to take reacts with the products that has been recommended. In the end, the very helpful girl behind the counter sorted out some natural products for me. And that’s good news. I’ll go there again.

Back here was when I had my little accident with the coffee, and after lunch I was well away yet again. Obviously my first day out was a little too much.

Tea was an absolutely excellent stuffed pepper cooked in the oven, followed by apple crumble and vegan ice cream, seeing as I’d used the saucepanfor the tomato sauce.

And later on, I went out for a walk seeing as it’s now cleared up outside.

Another early night now and then I’ll be fit for the weekend.

Friday 30th June 2017 – I DIDN’T …

… buy myself a mini hi-fi today like I promised.

I stopped at BUT to have a good look around at all of the equipment that they had on offer, but there was nothing there that really tempted me all that much. And so I went on to LeClerc where I had seen some stuff before.

But having had a really good nosy around, I came away empty-handed.

My criteria are very simple –

  • CD player
  • USD port for data sticks
  • AM Radio (no point in having the live British football coverage on 5 Live from Jersey if I can’t pick it up
  • external data input (jack or RCA socket)
  • headphone socket
  • decent volume

And could I find one?

Not on your nelly I could.

So I went back to BUT to have a closer look, but it was now lunchtime and anyone who knows anything at all about France knows about the 2-hour lunch when the whole country grinds to a halt.

I’ve had a good browse on Amazon but with about 2,000 to choose from I’m pretty bogged down in a morass and my eyes have glazed over.

Last night was the worst night that I have had for a while. I was fidgeting for ages trying to find a comfortable position where I wouldn’t itch or womething, and it kept me awake for ever.

I must have dozed off though because it was the alarm that woke me up – and then I dozed off again until the repeater went off.

In that little fifteen-minute interval I went on a travel, to visit some kind of huge exhibition hall where there were just about half a dozen small stalls dotted here and there – rather like that famous supermarket in Poprad in Czechosolvakia (now Slovakia) when I took a coach out there when I worked for Shearings Holidays.

After breakfast I went, for the frst time, to LIDL here in Granville. No different than any LIDL anywhere else in the world, and the clientèle is the same too.

BUT was next, and then NOZ where I met the same clientèle that I’d left in LIDL. I bought some more spices (mainly for the jars that they come in) and a few other bits and pieces.

And here I struck gold.

Last time that I was in there they were selling some clothes airers. I’d seem them at €9:99 (which is an excellent price anyway) a while back and the last time they were reduced by 30%. I went to find them today (hopefully I’ll have my washing machine installed tomorrow) and there was just one left – reduced to a mere €2:00.

No prizes for guessing where that might now be found.

You’re probably thinking that at that price it might not be much good and that surely I’d be better off buying stuff to last. While I don’t necessarily disagree with you, I would say

  1. decent stuff might well last, but my medical prognosis is that I might not
  2. With setting up a new house, I need so much stuff that I can’t afford to go out and buy everything at top quality. Buying a pile of cheap stuff just to set me off on the road means that I will have it all fairly quickly, and as it wears out or breaks down, I can replace it bit by bit

Shopping in the food part of LeClerc came next, and then we had the abortive return journey to BUT

After lunch – spent indoors because it was now raining – I crashed out for quite a while. I blame the sleepless night on that. And I cracked on with the blog too.

Tea was the final instalment of the curry and now it’s an early night.

Washing machine tomorrow, with a bit of luck.

Thursday 16th February 2017 – WHILE YOU ADMIRE …

verbrande poort verbrandepoort leuven belgium february fevrier 2017 … the photos from my little perambulation this afternoon, I can tell you something about the events of today, because we’ve had another one of these days that has been a quite busy work-in.

I had something of an early night again and this time I wasn’t awake all that long before dropping to sleep. And we had another session of awakening at 06:00 and then again at 06:30 before my alarm went off as usual at 07:00

and once that had sounded, I wandered upstairs for my breakfast.

river dijle handbooghof city walls leuven belgium february fevrier 2017I was alone for breakfast, and just for a change just recently we had everything supplied for us. But then again, I’m in one of these moods where I’m not eating so much as I did, so it wasn’t necessarily that important as long as I had my orange juice.

And so having dealt with those issues, I came back down here and had to crack on with some work that needed doing – and there was plenty of it to do

river dilje handbooghof city walls leuven belgium february fevrier 2017First task that needed doing was to pay my web domain fees, otherwise I’d risk being up a creek without a paddle. Luckily, I’d just received my new bank card and so I could crack on with that.

AND THAT REMINDS ME

My domain and web-hosting fees are not inconsiderable, but there’s tons of exciting stuff on here and you have certainly all had your money’s worth.

If you are happy with what you’ve been learning and reading on here, don’t forget to make your next Amazon purchase by using the links on the sidebar on the right. It costs you nothing extra of course, but I earn a small commission which helps defray my expenses.

river dijle handbooghof leuven belgium february fevrier 2017Having dealt with the issues surrounding my domain, the next step was to make a couple more appointments for people whom I need to see here in Leuven before I head off back into the sunset or whatever.

I have some hospital fees to pay, and I’ll be needing a letter from the hospital in respect of my future treatment and so on, something that I can hand to my medical insurance people.

I’m seeing the insurance folk tomorrow and they’ll tell me precisely what is required, and so I made an appointment for Monday with Kaatje at the Social Services section of the hospital.

apartments river dijle handbooghof leuven belgium february fevrier 2017She’ll have all of the bills ready for me, and if I tell her what the insurance people want, she can have the letter ready for me when I go back there for my final appointment.

And then the trick cyclist has been on and on about seeing me again as you know. So I contacted her and told her when I plan to leave the hospital, and she’s arranged an appointment with me on that day so that she can tell me what the score is.

apartments river dijle handbooghof leuven belgium february fevrier 2017All that remained after that was some kind of long-distance business.

You know that my credit card expired a while ago, which was rather inconvenient because I have a standing order from that account to pay for my little storage unit in Montreal where I keep my camping gear. When I was in Montreal back in early September I went round there and paid them off a lump sum to get ahead while I sorted something out.

My lump sum has now expired and so I needed to set up a new payment regime. I was expecting this to be quite complicated, but nothing of the sort, especially as they have set up some kind of on-line accounting service.

I mailed them for a password, they sent it (and I changed it to the standard one that I use), I set up an account, and that was that.

river dijle leuven belgium february fevrier 2017I’ve run out of tomatoes, and seeing as I’m going to be away tomorrow and Saturday, and I’m out on Sunday too, no point in buying foodstuffs that I’ll only need once before Monday.

I had most of a baguette left over from yesterday too, and when I was shopping in the LeClerc in Sedan in November, I’d bought half a dozen packet soups.

This seemed like the right kind of occasion to make myself some packet tomato soup for lunch, and I mopped it up with my baguette. Just the job!

river dijle leuven belgium february fevrier 2017It was a really beautiful afternoon today once more, and as I hadn’t any fruit, I decided to go out to the fruit shop for a pear and apple, and then walk down the Handbooghof along the river Dijle by what remains of the city walls and then back here through the alleys.

My time in Leuven is (hopefully) coming to an end, and I’ve been very lax with my photographs of places where I’ve been. I need to bring the record up-to-date.

If things go according to plan, I’ll only be back here from day to day. I’ll come in on the train, spent the night before and the night after my check-ups in the IBIS Budget by the station, and then go back again.

verbrande poort verbrandepoort leuven belgium february fevrier 2017But of course, as we all know, it won’t work out like this. It never does!

Back here, I made myself a coffee and then I crashed out for half an hour, really tired. The walk had taken quite a bit out of me and I can’t do much about that right now.

But I’m going to have to do much better than this. And quickly too. I have plans for the very near future as you know, and I need to be right on form.

apartments verbrande poort verbrandepoort leuven belgium february fevrier 2017This evening I had a shower, a shave and some clean clothes, including one of my new pairs of trousers. I have to go out tomorrow so I need to be looking my very best.

And while I was under there, I washed the pair of trousers that I had been wearing. I have to keep on top of things like that these days, otherwise I’d run out like I did the other day.

Following all of that, I went for tea. More of the tomato and kidney bean stuff with pasta and, of course, olives. All followed by pineapple slices and the vegan sorbet. And as I have said before, the kidney-bean whatsit tastes even better the longer it all stews.

So now it’s a good early night as I’m on the road all day tomorrow. I need to be at my best.

Thursday 29th October 2015 – AND THERE I WAS …

… in Hong Kong Harbour last night (except that it wasn’t Hong Kong harbour at all but an artificial kind of canal system running between two rows of impressive houses like the boulevard that goes up to the railway station in Montlucon. Right down at the end of it, where I had my small bedsitter, was a British battleship that had suffered battle damage and had been brought in for repair. Around the corner came a Japanese heavy battle-cruiser which saw the British ship, steamed up towards it and from a range of about 100 metres gave it two turrets’ worth of high explosive armour-piercing shells that caused the British ship to sit on the bottom immediately.Even more exciting that this was watching the battle-cruiser screech to a stop about 10 feet before colliding with the British ship.

I decided to make myself scarce for a while. As an enemy of the Japanese, I’d be the first into the camp if they came ashore, and I couldn’t imagine the Japanese ship sitting here for very long in this narrow waterway, impossible to manoeuvre against a determined aerial attack.

So when I came back, not only where the Japanese and their ship still there, they had rounded up the crew of the British ship and marching them back to their ship, and beginning to comb the town using dogs.

This was where I realised what a fool I had been. I had remarked on coming back that it looked as if someone had tried my door, and now I knew – it had been set like that after I had left so that the Japanese would know that I had returned when I reset the door handle (which was exactly what I had done) and they would be here any second.

And so I fled for the hills. I encountered loads of British people who lived in grey concrete apartment blocks up there. All of them seemed to be resigned, cheerfully resigned to being captured by the Japanese and all that came with it, but if anyone thought that I was going to sit around calmly and wait to be taken prisoner they were completely mistaken. I was off.

There’s absolutely no doubt whatever that whatever happens and wherever I go when I’m deep in the arms of Morpheus is much more exciting than whatever happens to me in real life, is there?

And there must have been something going on, for this morning I noticed a trail of blood leading to and from the beichstuhl. It seems that during one of my nocturnal visits to ride the porcelain horse I must have cut my toe on something, yet I don’t remember a thing.

Anyway, last night’s voyages (both of them) were certainly more exciting than what happened today. I had breakfast and then I set to work on my next magnum opus. I told you yesterday that Amazon had discontinued its A-stores after all the time that I had spent in creating one before I went to Canada. Anyway, to cut a long story short … "hooray" – ed … I’ve started to build my own from scratch.

And, apart from a few interruptions here and there, that was all that I’ve done today. I’e not even been outside, except to take the stats tonight.

And Rosemary rang me again for another chat. Just as I was about to make my tea. We chatted for about an hour by which time the edge had gone off my appetite and I decided,to go to bed.

So where else is there to go tonight after Hong Kong yesterday?

Wednesday 28th October 2015 – THE ANSWER TO YESTERDAY’S QUESTION IS …

… the bathroom. That’s where I ended up last night on my travels.

And that was partly by accident too, because I had a very severe attack of cramp in the middle of the night and it took me ages to shake it off. And that didn’t work all that well either, because I still have a tense muscle in the upper rear of my right thigh.

But anyway, seeing as I was up, I went to the bathroom.

With nothing urgent that needed doing today, I didn’t exactly rocket out of bed, and then after breakfast I had a leisurely morning doing stuff on the laptop and sorting myself out. And then there was some housekeeping to be done about the records that I keep for Radio Anglais.

But here’s a thing. For the rock music programmes that we do, I keep a playlist of what albums are played during the month, like this one, and then a website where all of them might be seen, with an opportunity for interested listeners to purchase them. I spent days during July and the first part of August to set up this A-store, and now I find that Amazon has taken down all of their A-stores with effect from 31st August, just a few weeks after I finished setting it up.

I shall now have to think again, and make up an A-store of my own. That was all a waste of time and effort, wasn’t it? But one thing that I did learn while I was doing it – and that is that my CD collection is worth a fortune. I have a couple of CDs that would sell on Amazon for over €200 each, and several others that would bring in a pile of dosh too.

After lunch I took the bull by the horns and steam-cleaned the fridge. Plenty of bleach and disinfectant went into it and while I wouldn’t like to eat my dinner off it, it’s still a lot cleaner than it ever has been in recent times, and that’s good news. I also spent some time tidying up on the ground floor, although you wouldn’t notice the difference.

After a brief crashing-out, I made tea and, true to form, Rosemary rang up for a chat and we were on the phone for about an hour. So I finished off tea, which was Rice and lentils with mixed veg and gravy. And now I’m going to do the washing up and have an early night again.

I’ll see if I can make it past the bathroom tonight.
