Sunday 18th June 2017 – LIZ CAME ROUND …

… while I was busy chatting to Krys (with whom I haven’t spoken for quite a while) so sorry if cut you off, Krys.

With Sunday being a day of rest and a cause for a lie-in, I was determined not to leave my stinking pit when I awoke. But finding it impossible to stay in bed any longer, I arose to find that it was … errrr … 06:55. Quite.

So after an early breakfast and a bit of a relax, I headed off to the magasin de presse for my baguette – and he was closed.

But no worries – down the hill to the boulangerie opposite the casino – and closed for holidays.

I ended up in the early morning heat (and believe me, it was hot) tramping around the town until I found a boulangerie that was open. And I’m glad that I found that one because the bread proved to be delicious.

Back up the hill I staggered (I was exhausted and boiling hot by now) and came back to do the rest of the tidying up and have a nice good shower to see me right for the rest of the year. And a chat to Krys of course and another one of my friends – the one who has been described on these pages on various occasions as “The One That Got Away”.

Liz and I had a coffee and put the world to rights, and then made our butties (I’d bought two baguettes). Once that was organised we headed off into the sun and found a spot right down at the end of the promontory by the lighthouse where was had lunch. Liz produced some sliced pineapple for pudding.

Later on after a few hours in the sun we found a cafe on the roof of the aquatic museum near here – and there was a splendid view over the harbour from up there. And much to my delight a close inspection of Liz’s ice cream disclosed that it was in fact a vegan sorbet. Now I really am in my elephant!

Liz went off home and I came back here and … errr … closed my eyes for a little. Well, it really was hot.

Pizza tonight was delicious, but as for the pie that I baked, I don’t make mistakes, I just learn a lot of lessons, such as the fact that I have bought the wrong pastry for a start. The lentils were nice though – done all day in the slow cooker, but the mix was far too wet and there was far too much of it (a pile went in the freezer for another time).

After I’ve finished the curry tomorrow, I’ll start o the pie on Tuesday. If it ends up in the bin, don’t be surprised. You have to pay to learn.

And I’ve made it into November 2011 with my blog revision. By my calculations, only another 300 – 350 entries to go. But the further I go, the more difficult it becomes and there’s a pile of stuff that is going to need some complicated unravelling

Friday 19th October 2012 – THE HURRICANE …

… finally calmed down during late afternoon.

But not before several really impressive records were set. We didn’t quite manage the maximum wind-speed – the 66.7mph gust from May is safe for another while yet- but everything else was historic.

So much so that the Air 403 wind turbine on the roof of the barn generated more electricity today that in the rest of the 15 months that it’s been there.

The Rutland WG901 on the house surpassed the previous record and showed me the magic result on the timer
“Time since I took the last reading – 25 hours and 16 minutes”
“Wind time since last reading – “25 hours and 16 seconds”.

As well as that, the temperature here in the attic is now back up to the 20s – and I should think so too. I was freezing the other night.

So anyway, after the usual messing around on the computer I went outside to rectify the damage.

I picked up the kindling bins and the kindling and reorganised them (I don’t know why I bothered though – they blew over again) and picked up all of the stuff that had been propped against the end of the barn (and that blew back down twice more)

Major work though was with the Air 403 wind turbine fastened to the fence.

The screws have given way under the fierce battering that they took from the wind and the whole affair was blowing around like crazy. Screws clearly don’t work.

As I didn’t have any bolts long enough, you can see the benefits of having lengths of stud iron (or threaded rod as it’s called these days) lying around. I cut a few lengths of that and made up some bolts, and now it’s all properly bolted together and I hope that that won’t move again.

With no bread and still no boulangère I went into Pionsat to find out why she doesn’t love me any more, and I soon found out, much to my dismay.

The boulangerie is closed.

According to the notice on the door, it’s closed “until further notice” following an accident on the premises involving the oven. That’s upset my plans and no mistake. I shall have to think again about this.

Back home I finished off emptying the back half of the hard-standing. I need to buy some weedkiller to deal with the weeds on there, and on Monday I’ll start digging out the soil that has collapsed.

This is going to be a very long job.

Tuesday 20th March 2012 – I WAS BUSY TODAY

First thing, after breakfast, was to check all of this paperwork that I’ve been doing, and then take a few pieces down to the mairie to sign or countersign.

Back here then, I then had to photocopy everything, or scan it for reference.

Bill rang me up too – he was having computer issues and needed help sorting that out and so I told him that when I had done my errands I would go round to help.

Off to Pionsat, and first stop was the bank, to pay an outstanding bill. And talking of bills, there was Bill in front of me. He managed to make the woman at the cash desk crash her computer and so we all had an agonising wait while she tried to fix it.

So having sorted that problem, it was off to the Post Office. They have a guaranteed 2-day delivery service, which is what I need, but of course none of the special envelopes that you need to do it. She can order one, but it won’t get here until the morning.

At my insistence, she rang the St Gervais office. They had one in and the parcel lorry was there and so St Gervais sent it down in the lorry.

The postal clerk put my papers into it, and handed it to the parcels driver to send it on its way. At least I hope that she did – it’s what she told me that she would do and she better had as well, for I am working to a strict time limit here.

Down to the boulangerie. There was no delivery this morning and so I needed to buy the bread.

But woe is me – the boulangerie closes for lunch between … errr … 13:00 and 15:00. This meant a trip to the Intermarché for some bread, so I picked up a loaf and wandered over to the till.

A woman with a full-to-overloaded trolley saw me coming and … quickly put her purchases onto the conveyor belt. Aren’t some people nice?

At Bill’s I managed to fix his computer for him and then we had a good chat for ages – all about old cars, buses and the like. It always helps to pass the time of day.

But it was cold today and so I lit the fire up here this evening. So much so that I lit the fire for the first time in 10 days. And taking advantage, I cooked baked potatoes and baked beans for tea.

Tomorrow I’ll do some gardening, I reckon. That is, unless the weather is really bad.

It’s clear skies and stars outside just now but this is the Auvergne and things can change in the blinking of an eye.
