Saturday 28th January 2017 – PANIC AT THE SCOUT HUT!

Here I was, sitting in my little room this afternoon when I heard the sirens.

ambulance scout hut kruisstraat leuven belgium january janvier 2017Two emergency ambulances in fact, one a proper full-sized thing and the other was one of these rapid response estate car things. And they came roaring up the Kruisstraat, the wrong way of course as you might expect, and shuddered to a halt at the scout hut, which is at the rear of this building.

There was some kind of commotion there, and then the big ambulance departed in a hurry, with the little one following on behind with its lights and siren switched off.

The wrong way up the Kruisstraat, of course.

I didn’t have much of a sleep last night and although I was away on my travels everything evaporated as soon as I awoke, which was long before the alarm went off. In other words, I was whacked this morning.

My German housemates were in there for breakfast and it’s a fact that I couldn’t eat mine. Half of it ended up in the bin. I don’t know what’s the matter with me these days. Can’t sleep, can’t eat, can’t do anything.

Seeing as I’m out tomorrow, I hope, I went for a shower and a shave and a change of clothes. I may as well, even if they haven’t been this week to change my linen despite the promise that they made on Monday. Can’t say that I’m too impressed with the housekeeping. But then again, the price that I’m paying to stay here, I’m not complaining.

The Carrefour was on the agenda too. I walked down there via Caliburn, giving him a start and a little warm-up for five minutes. I bought a few bits and pieces for lunch and for Sunday tea. No hummus though as I have a pile of vegan cheese. I’ll go for cheese butties instead.

frozen fountain botanical garden kapucijnenvoer leuven belgium january janvier 2017My path down to the Carrefour took me past the Botanical Gardens in the Kapucijnenvoer. And I was arrested by this bizarre sight.

Although it is comparatively warm for the time of year right now, it’s been freezing for quite a few days. And the fountain by the entrance to the Botanic Gardens is still partly-frozen.

I should have come down to see it in the middle of the cold spell, I suppose, but it was still quite photogenic. I wasn’t the only person photographing it today.

This afternoon, in between a little snooze, someone “shared” a football match on their Social networking site. Caernarfon Town against Rhyl in the Welsh Cup. If they simply link to it, I can’t see it as there’s a block on transmission but “sharing” it means that I can watch it, which I did. That was a nice change.

For tea I had more of my kidney bean stuff with pasta. And it was just as delicious as Thursday too. It was followed by pineapple slices and sorbet, which was even nicer.

I’ll try now to have a good long sleep ready for tomorrow. I’m hoping to have an afternoon out tomorrow.

Monday 23rd January 2017 – I PAID …

… for my exciting weekend today, as you might expect. Struggled to finish my lunch before I crashed out, and then was gone until about 16:30. Completely too, and it was a struggle to come round again.

Last night didn’t help much though. I struggled to go to sleep – it took ages to drop off but at least I had a deep undisturbed sleep – until 06:30 when my Eastern European housemates awoke. They are reasonably quiet in their behaviour so I can’t complain too much, but 06:30 is rather early to start running around and showering and all of that.

They remembered to bring breakfast around so at least we had fresh bread today. But they had forgotten to empty the waste bin for a couple of days running now so that’s overflowing now.

After breakfast, I had a slow steady morning and then went for a walk. I need some shopping so I decided to walk right down to the Carrefour by the football ground. And I’m glad that I did too because they were selling 1-litre tubs of vegan citron sorbet for just €2:00, as well as large tins of pineapple slices for €0:59. That means that my puddings for the next few days will be extremely interesting.

Of course, this afternoon passed by without much of a whimper and I was talking to my little-niece Hannah on the internet. She’s come to Madrid for 6 months under a University exchange scheme and that will do her good. I’m all in favour of young people broadening their horizons as much as they possibly can.

Tonight I had my pizza and garlic bread for tea, and now I’m having an early night for I’m having visitors tomorrow.

I’ve had more visits here than I ever had living back in the Auvergne haven’t I? At least there’s some benefit to living here, isn’t there?

Thursday 19th January 2017 – I HAD A NICE …

… day out today for a change.

I’d run out of lunch stuff and so I set off to the Carrefour by the football ground for a good shop. On the way down there I stopped off at Caliburn to see how he was doing, but it was a bit of a struggle to start him up with the cold and the fact that he’s not been anywhere for quite a while.

And so I decided to give him a run up and down the road and that in the end led me out to Kessel-Lo. I went to Bio-Planet for a baguette and some vegan cheese, and then to the Carrefour down the road for a big shop. It was 13:40 by the time I came back. But I’d had a good couple of hours out for a change.

last night was another bad night with me not dropping off until late. And then I was awake a couple of times during the night, finally at about 06:45. Alone again for breakfast and then back down here for a while.

There was no heating this morning – that was what made me go out for a good wander. It would have to be the coldest day of the year so far, wouldn’t it? But later tonight it was fixed and that’s better.

I’ve had a crash out as well this afternoon, and read some more about this Finnish expedition to Labrador. They are spending a lot of time talking about the Inuit and their wanderings around Labrador. It seems that the population insofar as it has been recorded has hovered around the 1200-1300 mark. But a rough count around 1921 came out with just 800 or so – this being just after the Spanish Influenza epidemic of 1918-19 which decimated the population of the Labrador coast and wiped out the villages of Okak and Hebron.

Tonight I finished off my curry and so I have my chips for tomorrow – well, in fact, croquettes. Trying to find oven chips here is next-to-impossible, even in a huge supermarket like the Carrefour. So tomorrow it will be croquettes, beans and sausages and Iam looking forward to that.

Now I’m having an early night if I can. There are quite a few new people here today and I hope that they are quiet.

Wednesday 4th January 2017 – TEA TONIGHT …

… didn’t turn out like it should have done, and that was rather disappointing.

You may remember that I fancied chips, beans and vegan sausages. But firstly, the Carrefour had no vegan sausages. And while Alison had bought me some beans and malt vinegar, the Carrefour couldn’t produce any oven chips.

Well, it could. But in the LIDL in France you can buy a 800-gram bag for about €0:99 and that’s enough for two meals. But there’s nothing like that here. Belgium really is the land of the chip and there’s nothing less than 2kgs here and I have no way of keeping that much.

In the end, I had to settle for a 1kg bag of oven croquettes which is nothing like the same, and a couple of vegan curry burgers. This was something of a let-down, I can tell you.

Last night was another disturbed night, and for no good reason too. I don’t know why I’m having difficulty sleeping just now but it’s rather upsetting. Here we’re in almost-perfect quite with just two or three other guests of good habits, and I can’t take advantage of it.

I’ve not done too much today – in fact round about lunchtime I crashed out again for half an hour. But I did make it down to the Carrefour near the football ground for shopping. And as it happens, I forgot most of the things that I had intended to buy – and I’ve run out of pasta so that’s bad news.

But tomorrow night I have more croquettes, another burger and the rest of the beans. But no more Christmas pudding- I finished off the last of that tonight.

Now I’m going to have an early night and hope for the best. I’ve not managed to free off the mouse on the new laptop so I’ll have to continue with that tomorrow. I’m wondering if I’ve managed to get a biscuit crumb stuck under the mouse key – something silly like that.

Friday 23rd December 2016 – I HAD ANOTHER …

… depressing day today.

Having crashed out on and off for quite a while yesterday, it was ages before I could drop off to sleep. And thenwe had the usual door-slamming incident in the small hours.

Not only that, I had to leave my bed a couple of times during the night and I’ve not had to do that for a while either.

After breakfast I was researching some stuff on Labrador for a while and then round about 10:30 I set off.

Going via Caliburn to drop off my large bag, I went on to the Carrefour near the football ground. And now, I’ve stocked up with vegetables for Christmas. I have enough leeks and onions, but I bought some more spuds and carrots as well as some endives and, it goes without saying, some sprouts. It’s impossible to have a Christmas without any sprouts as far as I am concerned.

All that I need now is some spray-on vegan cream for my vegan mince pies and a loaf of bread for when the shops are closed. And some sweets too as a special treat. But all of that will be from up town tomorrow.

I brought some more stuff back up here from Caliburn, including my Christmas presents to me. I’ll have to wrap them tomorrow too so that they will be a surprise for when I open them.

This afternoon I had a play with the 3D program that I occasionally use. it’s been a while since I had it out and what I was trying to do didn’t work out so well.

Tea was another load of the curry that I made yesterday and seeing as there wasn’t as much as I would like, I added a carrot to the rice when I cooked it all. That bulked it up a little.

But one thing that did annoy me was that I’d bought a couple of tins of sliced green beans to eat with my pies – and I’d forgotten them. That’s just typical, isn’t it?

Now I’m going to bed, and I’m really hoping that I can have a good sleep. This door-slamming isn’t ‘arf getting me down.

Tuesday 20th December 2016 – I MADE SURE …

… that I dropped off early to sleep last night.

What I did was to do something that I hadn’t done for quite a while, and that was that I got into bed and started to watch a film on the laptop. Sure enough, after only about 10 minutes or so, I was off.

But if I ever lay my hands on whoever it was who left the building at 02:40 this morning, slamming the door behind them, they they will know about it. Because I didn’t go back to sleep afterwards.

And it was just as well because the girl in the room next door was up and about at 06:00 and she wasn’t exactly quiet either. But then you can’t pick your housemates, can you?

Anyway, I was in at breakfast at 07:00 and out by 07:30 and back down here at work.

Meanwhile, I forgot to tell you about a couple of things that happened to me at the hospital yesterday.

parking uz gasthuisberg leuven belgium december decembre 2016For the benefit of those who don’t speak French, the sign on the back of the Fiat van says “Please don’t park within 3 metres …” of the rear doors, to allow the rear doors to open to admit a wheelchair.

And so the car behind is parked within 1 metre of it – right outside the entrance to a hospital.

I went up to the driver and asked him if a sign has to be written in both official languages (French and Flemish) to be legal, but as you might expect, my comment went clear over his head.

As Alfred Hitchcock once said to Kenneth Williams “it’s a waste of time telling jokes to foreigners”, and reminds me of the spoof Open University course on “Understanding Irony”, which actually received several applicants.

But it’s a sad reflection of the selfish attitude of many Belgians, isn’t it?

But the second thing was even more unnerving.

I walked up to the reception desk and the woman looked at me and said “ahh, Mr Hall …” Yes, I’m even being recognised by the clerical staff in the hospital now. This is uncomfortable, isn’t it?

ginger beer dandelion and burdock vegan mince pies custard pies bombay mix, linda mccartney vegan pies bisto gravy browning english shop kortenberg bertem belgium december decembre 2016Another thing that I have forgotten to do is to post the photo of the stuff that I bought on Sunday at the English shop.

Working clockwise around, we have Linda McCartney vegan pies, a vegan Christmas pudding, Bisto vegan gravy browning, a bottle of ginger beer, a bottle of dandelion and burdock, a bag of Bombay mix, some custard powder and, pride of place, two boxes of vegan mince pies.

Now I’m all set up for Christmas.

Later this morning I went down to Caliburn to sort out some stuff to bring up here and then went down to the Carrefour. I came back with a baguette and some tomatoes, some seitan slices (for Christmas dinner), some potatoes, some carrots and some leeks as well as a couple of pots of fresh spices.

That was because, for tea, I had boiled potatoes with fresh mint, carrots with fresh rosemary, leeks and Linda McCartney vegan pie covered in thick Bisto gravy. It made such a change from my usual fare and it was absolutely delicious. It all worked out fine too, much better than my pizza did. I shall be doing more of this, as well as looking at the possibility of baked potatoes in the microwave here.

High time that I was organised.

This afternoon I crashed out for a while and also did some work on my web pages.

Another thing that I did was to walk into the (unlocked) bathroom just as my nubile next-door neighbour was wrapping herself in a towel after her shower. Serves her right for not closing the door!

So now we’ll have another go at an early night. And I’ll hope for better luck too.

Wednesday 23rd November 2016 – PHEW! I’M WHACKED!

Yes, today was the day that I had to go to the hospital at Leuven.

And how difficult was it to haul myself out of bed at 07:00 to hit the road? You have no idea.

No breakfast of course, but what with having to wash and make myself pretty, it was 07:30 when I finally hit the road. Through the fog, the hanging cloud, the darkness and the drizzle to the motorway and then an uneventful drive all the way to Leuven. uneventful, of course, except for the tractor-trap in the suburbs of the city that slowed everyone up. It took me less than 2 hours all told.

Caliburn went into his hidey-hole and I walked up to the hospital to organise some breakfast. All done and dusted, checked in and in the waiting room long before the due time of 10:50.

I was out by 14:30 too. The highlight, or actually the lowlight of the day was the fact that they have stopped serving bread with the soup. That’s no good.

But apart from that, my blood has gone back up to 10.6 all on its own (although it doesn’t feel like it) and while my water retention has eased, my protein loss has accelerated. So – back in a week.

And as the professor is only there in the morning next week, it means that I have to postpone my eye test too. It’s a good job that I’m going back to stay in the hostel.

The drive back was even more uneventful.

There’s a Carrefour in Leuven as you know so I called there for bread and stuff but I was having a “fruit” moment so I bought a “reduced” fresh fruit salad thingy and a litre of 100% pineapple juice, and scoffed the lot on the car park. And there are grapes for tomorrow.

My route brought me back to Bouillon, which is a soup-er … "ohh, well-done" – ed … place and stopped to take a pile of photos in the dark, falling over the edge of the pavement and badly cutting my right knee.

There’s a falafel place in Bouillon so I had a decent tea as well.

And now I’m back here and seeing how tired I am, you’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see the photos of Bouillon.

I’m doing nothing more!

Saturday 12th November 2016 – I HAD A NICE …

… four hours out with Alison today.

She came round at about 11:00 and we went off to the good cafe down the street for a coffee and a chat. We were there for quite some time too.

Once we’d finished we went for a walk to look at a couple of shops and then went down the road to the ALDI where Alison did some of her shopping. And then over the road to Spit, the huge Charity Shop just there. And there was tons of good stuff in there too, much of which is at a decent price. I could quite happily furnish a small apartment from there.

There’s a Troc in the vicinity too, somewhere in between Leuven and Mechelen. The prices in there though are totally ridiculous, even though the stuff looks really good quality. But here’s something that you can buy me for Christmas if you can’t think of anything better – they had a late Medieval suit of armour in there. Wouldn’t that look nice standing up in the corner of my house? But €895 was a bit ridiculous really, although nothing like as ridiculous as the €12,500 they wanted for a bronze fountain that looked like a good well.

Alison took me later to the English shop. There’s a fish and chips van that parks up there a couple of days a week but that wasn’t what excited me. They had vegan pies which will go down nicely with some new potatoes and vegetables, but the highlight was definitely the vegan mince pies. I’ll be back there a few days before Christmas, that’s for sure.

On the way back I picked up a baguette at the Carrefour by the football ground and had lunch once I returned. following that I did some more research for my web pages on Labrador. I’ve found a couple of really good sites of interest on the internet – one that lists every known community in Labrador in about 1910 and the access port where appropriate (and there’s tons of interesting stuff on there) and secondly, an interactive map that shows the location of almost every known geographical feature in Labrador. I could really lose myself in those sites.

For tea it was pasta with a tin of chick peas and vegetables and tomato sauce. and then a nice relaxing evening.

This afternoon I’d crashed out for an hour or so but that is probably something to do with the disturbed night that I’d had. It took me ages to drop off to sleep and when I finally did, I was up and down several times too.

I’d been on my travels too, out to the Coasts of Labrador where there was a very narrow strip of land in bewteen the cliffs that narrowed even more just where I had to cross over the mouth of a small river. There was a young teenage girl with me too, rather like a girl with whom I’d had a lengthy discussion once when I was out on the North Shore of the Gulf of St Lawrence in May 2012. Although what she was doing suddenly making an appearance I have no idea.

Thursday 10th November2016 – I HAD RATHER A …

… restless night last night. It took me ages to drop off to sleep. And then I was awake long before the alarm went off.

Nevertheless, I hadn’t had to leave my bed during the night and no only that, I’d had a busy night being away on my travels. And, as usual these days, the whole lot disappeared the moment I awoke.

I was on my own at first for breakfast but I was soon joined by some others. I wasn’t that much alone. And back here afterwards, I couldn’t find the motivation to start on my website. Concentration and motivation seem to be lacking right now and I don’t know why after my successes just recently.

By the time 11:00 came round, I went off to Caliburn to sort out some of the stuff that i’ll need here for the next week, and then down to the Carrefour by the football ground to pick up some sandwich stuff.

On the way back here I went via Caliburn to pick up the stuff that I had sorted out, and found later on when I was making my tea that I had forgotten a storage container for the other half of tea for tomorrow.

After lunch I had a good chat with two or three people and I also crashed out for a while. And not only that, I did manage to do some kind of work on my website.I also went down to the bistro to pay for my lodgings but once more, there was no-one there.

For tea I made pasta, kidney beans, veg and tomato sauce thickened with boulghour. And there’s half left for tomorrow which I had to leave in the saucepan as I didn’t have anywhere else to leave it.

I also had a chat with the landlord of this place about my ongoing health problems. He might be able to work out a good deal for me if I stay here. And I might just accept it too because I don’t really know where else to go for the next three or four months that I might have to stay here.

I’ll have to think long and hard about this.

Saturday 29th October 2016 – IT NEVER RAINS …

… but it pours, doesn’t it?

I decided that in order to changer mes idées, as the French so aptly put it, I’d go out of town this lunchtime and do my shopping out at Kessel-LO, to give me a good opportunity to have a wander around.

And the net result of my external perambulations?

The Fortis Bank there has swallowed my bank card.

That’s all that I need, isn’t it? Lurching from one disaster to another while I’m here this last two or three weeks. I’m getting totally fed up of this. It’s about time that something went right with me for a change.

But at least I’d managed to go to Bio-Planet and buy some more vegan cheese and a beautiful baguette, as well as helping myself to the free samples and the complementary coffee. I bought some stuff (but nothing exciting) in Carrefour that I need to tide me over until Thursday when (hopefully) I’ll leave here and I had a good look around in Krefel to see what they had in the way of electrical appliances. But there was nothing that particularly excited me.

Last night, it didn’t take me long to go to sleep. And once I was asleep, I stayed asleep (except for one trip down the corridor). I awoke about 5 minutes before the alarm, and for once, I was washed and breakfasted and back in my room by 07:45.

My voyage last night was something of a strange parallel to real life. I was somewhere in north-west England, Lancaster or the like, and I had a few days spare. I was torn between going back home to Crewe for a short while or finding somewhere to stay up there. The idea of going to Silloth appealed to me, but I had a look at the map, which was in a holder up above my head in Caliburn and found the town of Oxenhope right on the coast not too far from where I was (and Oxenhope is of course miles away from the sea in real life) I could see that it was fairly large with a port and harbour, with a main street running along the front and so I reckoned that I would go there. But I couldn’t get Caliburn to start – and that was painful. We also had two children – rather like two kids that I know in real life – and they appeared on my voyages for some reason or other.

After breakfast, I had a little doze and did a few bits and pieces and round about 11:30 I wandered off down to Caliburn and out to Kessel-Lo.

Back here, it ended up being a late lunch and then I attacked the web site again. I’ve been working on it again and I’ve amended three web pages, this one, this one and this one. Stuff from my 2015 voyage needed to be added into the first two pages, and that led to adjustments on the third page.

I had a good chat with Liz and another one of my friends on the internet too. It’s certainly been a marvellous invention, hasn’t it?

Tonight, I finished off my curry from yesterday and now I’m planning on yet another early night. i’ll hopefully make the most of it because the clocks go back tonight. Back 100 years for those of you who voted for the Brexit.

But for me, it means that I might have an extra hour in bed asleep.

But I’ve heard all of that before.

Tuesday 18th October 2016 – THIS IS LOOKING OMINOUS AND I DON’T LIKE IT AT ALL

Here in my little room at the head of the stairs, I was just dropping off to sleep round about midnight when a couple of people came in. They said goodnight to each other in a tone of voice that could have been heard all over the city, but just as I was about to go out and tell them to shut up, they went their separate ways.

But that wasn’t all.

About 15 minutes after the girl in 1204 had gone to bed, she was up and in the bathroom. In fact, she was in there twice. And now the whole toilet area in the first-floor bathroom is plastered in vomit and the smell is disgusting. Anyway, I’m not tolerating this for a moment and first thing this morning I was on the telephone to the owner to complain.

It’s not his fault of course and I went to great lengths to explain that to him. he can’t be held responsible for that, but he ought to know about it and to come round and apply his foot to the nether regions of the people responsible.

So much for my early night and my good sleep. I was tossing and turning for hours after that.

However, I must have gone off to sleep at some point because I went off on my travels. I was with a large group of people, refugees, heading somewhere or other. We camped for the night in a park, setting up our camps in little family groups. I of course was on my own but there was a small, young family quite close to me and I had to pass them to go down to the lake for water. There was something going on with three young cats too, but I’m not very sure as to where they all fitted in to this story.

And how nice it is to be back in my little room (disgusting neighbours notwithstanding). The alarm went off at 07:00, followed almost immediately by the morning cacophony from the church across the road. It’s good to be back. And so I managed an early breakfast.

Now, I don’t know if you have been paying much attention to what I’ve been writing here and there about the Muskrat Falls in Labrador – the new hydro-electric plant that they are building that I visited in 2014, and how it has been claimed that a German U-boat has been discovered at the foot of the falls.

It seems that there is some kind of progress being made in this direction, and someone has tentatively identified it as U-851, a U-boat that disappeared off Newfoundland on or after 27th March 1944. She was a long-range cruising U-boat and was on her way to join the Monsoon wolf-pack operating in the Indian Ocean when she vanished.

After breakfast I did some work on my website for a few hours and although I updated some of it, my heart wasn’t in it. I was too tired after last night, I reckon.

And so instead I went out to Caliburn to sort out a big IKEA shopping bag. With that, I went off to the Carrefour near the footy ground to do some shopping. I’d run out of hummus and the salad mix that I like. A nice, steady walk that will do me good.

Back at Caliburn, I picked up a couple of books (I’m running out of reading material here) and a couple of other bits and pieces that I need, and then I walked back here.

Having sorted myself out, next stop was to fill the IKEA bag (you knew that there had to be a reason, didn’t you?) with all of the dirty washing, including some stuff that I didn’t have time to wash in Canada, and nipped off to the launderette and did the lot. Now I have all clean clothes so I can have a good shower and a change of clothes tomorrow. And quite right too.

Meanwhile, I’ve had a minor disaster here. Being stranded from my camera on a few occasions in Canada, I’d taken some photos on my Canadian phone. This afternoon, having rescued he phone from my suitcase in Caliburn earlier, I extracted the memory card from the phone but … the photos aren’t on it. They seem to be on the phone’s internal memory.

And, you might remember from about two months ago, the data cable isn’t working so transferring them over isn’t an option that’s available to me.

I could transfer them onto another phone of course, but it’s my Canadian phone, tied to the Bell telephone network, so there’s no network access over here.

All in all, it’s a bit of a disaster right now. Amber is going to have to wait a good while for her tractor-pulling videos with Perdy in the Pink at Millinocket, Maine the other week..

But I couldn’t keep it up for long this afternoon. All of the difficulties of the night, plus my exertions of Sunday and my walk today have worn me out and I crashed out for three hours while a rainstorm raged outside.

Crashed out properly too, so much so that I was off on my travels. In Canada too, in Strider as it happens. I’d come down a steep bank to a junction with a main road which passed over a bow-girder bridge over a railway line. There were several trains about, so I make a complicated manoeuvre … "PERSONoeuvre" – ed … to park up right by the bridge to photograph them. There was something else interesting down there next to the railway line – something like a holiday camp or a park – so I went to look at it. I struggled to find a place to park and ended up parked with the rear end of Strider hanging over the steps down to the place. I walked down with the crowds of people to a gift shop which doubled as the kiosk for entry into the place, but when I saw that the entry fee was $7:50 I changed my mind and walked back.

So now I’m awake and I’ve just had a really good chat with my friend Liz. I’m not in the least bit tired now so I can see me having another bad night’s sleep.

Friday 14th October 2016 – IT’S NICE …

… to be back!

I was in bed by about 21:30 last night, totally exhausted, and that was that. But not for long, unfortunately because the room where I am is right on the front of the house and there must have been a party somewhere in the vicinity because at about 01:15 a steady stream of noisy people went past here. That kept up until about 02:30 and so much so that I ended up doing some work on the laptop.

Once it quietened down I was soon back to sleep and that was that until the alarm went off at 07:00. I had been on my travels too during the night, doing something with a group of young people that involved being on a tower or a lighthouse and having to take a pile of plates and dishes -off-white with a pink border – down to be washed. While I was on the edge of a pond of muddy water I was stung on the wrist by a wasp and my instinctive response caused me to send a plate flying through the air into the mud where it broke. In fact, of the three plates that I was carrying, two of them were broken. And then, having done he rest of the washing-up I had to invent a system to hoist up the plates and dishes to the top of the tower.

Breakfast was the usual toast, muesli, orange juice and coffee (in fact, two mugs of coffee) and then back down to my little room. I pushed on with a pile of outstanding work and had quite a good day for a change. But at midday I had things to do.

First stop was to go down the road and pay the bill for staying here. I’m rather disappointed that he didn’t give me such a good deal as I had last time that I stayed here, but it’s still one of the best value-for-money places around so I oughtn’t complain too much.

Next stop was down to Caliburn, and then we went off to the Carrefour to do some shopping. Having done that, we all came back here and I unloaded some stuff. Clean clothes, the dirty stuff to go to the launderette and the food supplies. I took Caliburn back to his little hidey-hole and then came back here to make my butty for lunch.

This afternoon I carried on with what I was doing, although I did have a couple of distractions along the way. And as I was getting ready for my tea, Liz came on-line and we started to chat and have a photo-exchange session. By the time we had finished it was 20:45 and I didn’t feel much like cooking at that time of night. Instead, I had some biscuits and went to bed.

Saturday 27th August 2016 – I AM NOT ALONE!

There I was this morning, having another major coughing fit, when there was a knock on the door. it was one of my co-residents, asking me if I was OK or if I needed any help or anything. I explained the situation to her and she went away, but it really was nice that there are people who are concerned about me and my health.

But that was merely summing up my night last night, where I had difficulty sleeping due to my incessant coughing fits. But I went on one of my nocturnal rambles – something concerning the Dragnet radio programmes which I’ve been listening to since I downloaded the entire 7 years-worth of programmes from Archive.org along with a pile of other stuff.

The alarm woke me up this morning, which was a surprise, meaning that I must have slept through the 07:00 cacophony. And I struggled to eat breakfast too – so I’m definitely sickening for something. It was disappointing too because we had another loaf of that excellent bread. What a shame to miss out on it.

The heat was oppressive today – probably the hottest day of the year. After my nice relaxing morning doing not very much, I went up into town for shopping. Apart from the baguette and the lettuce from Delhaize, I pushed on to Wibra, near the railway station.

That’s something of an upmarket Dollar Store or Pound Shop, and when I was in there the other day I noticed that they had an excellent line of plastic containers and very democratic prices. I picked up a few – two large ones for my rice and pasta, and a smaller pouring container for the boulghour. And i’ll be back there for half a dozen others too because the ones that I have at home have seen better days.

I struck it lucky too while I was out. There are several of these ice-cream stalls in the city and one of them sells dairy-free sorbets. And so I was really in my element here. It’s high time that I treated myself.

After lunch, I crashed out for quite a while. It was far too hot to do anything else. And once it cooled down I washed and dried the containers and then sorted out the food in here. The place looks quite tidy now, which is a surprise for anyone who knows me.

Tea was rice with a tinned vegetable curry and garlic bread. The supermarket here sells these half-cooked half-baguettes at just €0:39 for two and while they don’t come out as nicely as the more expensive ones, it was still delicious. The smell was enough to entice one of my co-habitants into the kitchen.

Now I’m off for another cold shower and then I’m off to bed. Not that it will do much good in this heat.

and I’ve had no news yet about the studio.

Thursday 25th August 2016 – I HAD ANOTHER BAD NIGHT …

… where it took me hours to drop off to sleep. Mind you, the heat had something to do with that, I reckon. It really was stifling in here with the window closed.

And when I did drop off, it wasn’t for long and I kept on waking up all through the night with terrible coughing fits and I was feeling so uncomfortable. But I was definitely asleep when the 07:00 cacophony went off because that awoke me bolt upright. Mind you, waking up is one thing – leaving the bed was quite another.

When I eventually finished my breakfast, I came back up here and had a relaxing morning, which I deserved after my efforts of the other day. But I was out of the place at 11:00 tracking down some more accommodation. One estate agent was closed and another one didn’t have anything for me (and wasn’t all that interested either).

However, I did finally find the office of that student accommodation place – the one that was closed on Saturday – and when I explained my circumstances to them they didn’t throw me out but were content to have a listen to my story. They took my e-mail address anyway, and I suppose that this is something.

The Carrefour supermarket on the ring road by the football ground was next and on the way back home afterwards I found a few more places. One of them will consider me as a tenant and so I have to go to see the place tomorrow at 11:00. This is another one nearer the hospital so I hope that it comes up good.

After lunch I tried to take it easy but the cleaner came around to do the room – after a two-week absence. Now I have clean sheets and I’ll be taking a shower later so that I can have a nice clean me too.

Tea tonight was pasta, kidney beans and veg cooked with garlic fried in soya margarine and with boulghour and spicy tomato sauce added too. It was delicious too, and there’s enough for tomorrow too!

And so I’ll have an early night but I don’t imagine that I’ll be getting much sleep in this heat. But I shouldn’t be complaining – we haven’t had much weather like this so far this year.

Saturday 20th August 2016 – WE ARE BACK …

… in the realms of uncertain sleep – not that will be too much of a surprise for anyone. And that’s despite my having been for a nice walk in the afternoon too.

And so last night I was still awake at midnight, and I forget how many times I had to leave my stinking pit during the night but I reckon that it must have been a new world record. That’s enough to fill anyone with a load of dismay before you start.

But it didn’t stop me from going on a nocturnal ramble or two during the night. Apart from the odd one or two travels that would be of no interest to you while you are eating your breakfast, one one occasion I was out driving with a girl as my passenger. We were visiting various rural areas and in the distance further down the road we noticed a hump-backed bridge that could well have been a railway or canal bridge. It rang a bell with me, this bridge, and I expected to see a rather dramatic northern French town just over the bridge. And so I keyed up my passenger for the view, but once we passed over the bridge I was disappointed to notice that firstly, the bridge took us over an abandoned, weed-infested canal and there was an abandoned, weed-infested marina type of place to the right, and the town that I expected to see was non-existent and the view was quite banal. It was here that, at a road junction, we fell in with another delivery vehicle similar to the one that made an appearance the other night. And as well as delivering parcels, he had some letters to post, as well as having some gas bottles on board his vehicle.

Once I was half-awake, I was in the kitchen early for breakfast, and in fact I made a couple of trips, because the bread that was there this morning was the best that we have ever had. I had a bit of a doze and then headed off to the launderette.

I wasn’t there long. I checked my mails and the like, and had a good chat with Liz, and then headed off to Caliburn. Once we were reunited we set off for Kessel-Lo and the Bio Planet place. As well as the wholemeal baguette and the nibbles that are always on offer, I picked up some vegan cheese. They had a new variety of sliced cheese – one that I haven’t tried before – and so I bought the only packet of that which was left.

Round the corner and LIDL, I stocked up with a few other bits and pieces, and then over the road to the Carrefour for the rest of the shopping. A big pile of stuff, but nothing exciting except, maybe, a bag of sweets to suck on through the week.

There was an advert that had caught my eye a few days earlier. About a student accommodation agency in fact, and it was advertising open days between 10:00 and 17:00 every Saturday from May to September. Accordingly, I went round there on my way back from Kessel-Lo and, sure enough, it was all locked up and there was no-one there. Of course, this is Belgium, isn’t it? It’s the kind of thing that you can understand in France – the best-laid plans of mice and men oft go gang agley when the cow gets loose or the boulanger calls and if you don’t expect that sort of thing then living in rural France is clearly not for you, but there’s no reason for this kind of behaviour in Belgium, which is supposed to be much more cosmopolitan.

After lunch, I had a quick shave and shower because Alison was in town. We met up and went for a coffee and a good chat before her bus took her home. I picked up a tin of exotic curry stuff for tea but I wasn’t really all that hungry. Instead, I went back to the launderette to check the mail and had another chat with Liz.

But I have had a reply to one of my enquiries. One place was advertising studios “from £750 per month” and so I had enquired. Of course, £1350 per month is quite clearly “from £750”, but I only wanted to rent a room, not buy the building. I’m clearly going nowhere here.

And so now I’m going to have yet another early night. Tomorrow is, of course, another day and we’ll see what tomorrow might bring.

I hope that it’s more positive than today because all of this is starting to get me down.
