Thursday 19th March 2020 – THIS IS THE DAY …

… when I should have been seeing the specialist about my kidney function – or lack thereof.

But instead, after my marathon effort of yesterday driving all that way (just under 1000 kms in about 16 hours, I reckon) I’m back under house arrest at home.

It’s true that I’m not allowed to roam around physically, but that doesn’t stop my soul from rambling off during the night. As I have said before … “on many, many occasions” – ed … I have far more excitement during my sleeping hours than ever I do when I’m awake.

Last night I was i some kind of seaside town and there was a kind of expedition going off somewhere into the far north and I tried to tag myself along with it and the people agreed that I could come but kept on having thsse secret meetings without asking me. I kept on stumbiling across these meetings and in the end I was becoming rather short-tempered and at one particular one I said “is this a private meeting or can anyone join in?”. They said “yes, anyone can join in” so I went and they were busy allocating people to different kayaks – how you walk down onto the beach, how you get into your kayak (…they were actually these North American multi-purpose canoes…), how you push away, what happens if your kayak falls over, all this kind of thing, asking if you could swim. There were two girls there, pretty identical except that one was in a skirt – a light blue denim skirt instead of in trousers. They were talking about that – you had better chase the mosquitos off your knees, all that kind of thing, and this was starting to get rather serious. I had this feeling that no matter how much I pressed myself, I was being excluded from this trip and it was a very uncomfortable position to be in.

But anyway …

With no alarm this morning (after my efforts yesterday it’s hardly a surprise) I was awake at about 07:45 and out of bed by 08:00.

Having my medication (or such as there is left) I came back to look at the dictaphone, with the results that I mentioned just now. And then the digital sound files.

To be honest, I have to admit that my heart wasn’t in it and what with one thing another, including talking to several friends on the internet, it took me almost until lunchtime to do it.

Then a trip down to Caliburn to bring up the shopping. I’d bought enough stuff to see me through 5 days of Leuven but of course I didn’t need it. And there was of course my stock of panic-buying articles – the four jars of vegan mayonnaise. If I’m not going back to Leuven until I’ve no idea when, I’ll need as much of that as I can get.

After lunch – the left-over half of the baguette from yesterday, I sat down and had a look at the blog entry from Tuesday. I was hoping to do that, the one from yesterday and a whole lot more besides but I fell asleep on my chair not once or twice but three times. I seem to remember that whenever I went long-distance driving during the night in the past, I needed the next day to recover.

For tea, I had a burger with pasta. I have plenty of burgers, having bought two packs of two in Belgium to eat there during the evenings.

place marechal foch granville manche normandy france eric hallAnd naughty me! I went out for a walk in the evening later on, having duly filled out a form.

The first part of my run was a little disappointing – I only ran for about 10 yards past my usual finishing point and I’ve been doing better than that. But I did manage a photo of the Place Marechal Foch in the evening light.

The second run was much better, and I made several steps up the second ramp which is definite progress. And on the way back I encountered someone else coming the other way. First other person I’ve seen today of course.

Another thing that I’ve been trying to do throughout the day was to contact the doctor. Having been sent home from belgium with a flea in my ear, I’m running low on medication. Some time during the day I managed to get through to him and I have an appointment for 09:30 in the morning to discuss the situation.

For that reason I’m going to have a shower right now and then I’m off to bed for an early night.

We’ll see what tomorrow might bring.

Here we cab go out alone or with your family or partner that you also cohabit with and as long as you don‘t have close contact with strangers ( not that we do anyway). I was out cycling 25 km‘s a day out to the lakes the last 2 days as the weather has been great.

Yes Grahame, we’re allowed out “in the immediate vicinity” for exercise. It’s like the Black Death, waiting for it to hit you.

There’s talk that there’s going to be martial law and checkpoints with roadblocks here in the USA, starting Monday. We’ll see… I’m apparently an essential service so… see what happens next.
