Wednesday 3rd January 2018 – I WAS THINKING …

… about going to bed last night round about 01:20 when all of a sudden this ferocious wind suddenly sprung up.

I knew that it was coming of course – it’s been well-forecasted – but it hit with a violence that I haven’t encountered for quite a long time. Instead of going to bed, I stayed on the sofa and listened to it for quite a while.

Some time later I went off to bed and was off on my travels again. Playing football on a pitch down in front of the Mairie here in Granville, and the opposition was replacing thir players with young girls as the match advanced. It became a very uneven contest and I couldn’t understand what was going on.
A short while later, I was elsewhere in another football match on a very rough unkempt pitch where the grass hadn’t been mown for a year. I was up front, basically to make up the numbers (which sounds more like it), For some reason the opposing goalkeeper was caught out of position and the ball was played to me completely unmarked about 30 yards out. Of course I couldn’t run, and with half of the opposition bearing down on me I decided to trust my luck and kick it towards the goal and hope for the best, but with all of my best effort, I kicked it all of about 18 inches. And then I was caught up by the others.

Tha alarm went off at 07:30 but it was about 08:00 that I finally left the bed. And today I’ve managed three meals too – porridge for breakfast, soup for lunch and a plate of mashed potato and peas for tea.

I’ve not set foot out of the apartment today. The wind this morning was enough to keep anyone in and it kept on going until about 14:00. But after that, I was busy doing other things, including reading a pile of stuff on Roman Architecture and doing some more stuff on my little 3D animation project which I have rather neglected of late.

And also crasging out for half an hour too. I’m not sure as to whether this is a sign of tiredness, ill-health or that I’m feeling better.

But the toothache has come back so I’ve had a paracetomol and now I’m off to bed. Let’s hope that I can sleep.

Sunday 31st December 2017 – THAT WAS ANOTHER …

… miserable night last night.

Still awake at 01:45, and back awake again at 04:00, drenched in sweat yet again, with a dry throat and a little nauseous. I can’t shake it off, can I?

My travels didn’t seem to be so extensive, just for a change. Back in the family pile and my mother and father and younger borther were fishing out of the bedroom window into the river. They had me tying flies for them. Suddenly my borhter shouted up that he almost had a bite, and had I been quicker and doing my job he would surely have landed it. But the bath in the bedroom had no fish in it, no-one had caught anything and even the family cat was looking disappointed. MY mother then made one of her famous decisions that we were going to carry on fishing until we caught a bathful, even if it would take until next year and we were living in tents through the winter snows. “Fat chance of that” I thought to myself. I have a comfortable bed in a nice warm house and I fully intend to stay in it regardless of whatever plans anyone else had. I couldn’t imagine anything more boring than spending time fishing.

09:00 it was when I left the bed for my medication. And at 10:00 I had an attempt at a bowl of porridge. Much to my surprise, I managed to eat it without any problems.

Even more surprisingly I managed a mug of soup at about 14:30, followed by a tangerine and a couple of biscuits.

And if that’s not enough to be going on with, later in the evening I tried a small plate of mashed potatoes in butter and soya milk, with peas and cheese.

If all of that stays in, it will be the first for quite a while. First time since the night I came home from Belgium 2 weeks ago that I’ve had a hot evening meal, and first time since then that I’ve had three meals in a day.

But the hot meal has brought back the toothache. It seems that I just can’t win.

Monday 3rd March 2014 – LAST NIGHT’S HOTEL …

hotel de la paix oloron ste marie pyrenees atlantique france… was called the Hotel de la Paix at Oloron Ste Marie, and a good choice it was too.

But I wasn’t alone in my room last night. Frankie Howerd, who as you know is my favourite comedian, came in with the script for his new “Carry On” film, all 391 pages of it, and so much of the night was taken up with reading it.

And I can still remember quite a lot of the script too this morning. I’ll have to sit and write it all down before I forget it. I could be on to something here.

And so with raging toothache yet again, I loaded up Caliburn and sat down to check the route for the next stage of my journey.

But something was clearly not correct as it made no sense at all, and after puzzling over the map for a good 20 minutes I realised that somehow in plotting my route I had turned over two pages of the map at once and I had driven myself up an impasse, as it were.

Consequently I decided to follow the Lady Who Lives In The Satnav for the route today and she took me via Tarbes and Pau and then right across the foothills of the Pyrenees – having me stuck behind a caravanette on a narrow series of lanes for a good 60 km.

Loads of interesting things to see but I wasn’t in any mood to stop and look – this toothache ws driving me mad. I felt like finding a dentist and having allof my teeth taken out – something like back in the 1970s when Malcolm Allison had been appoined team coach at Crystal Palace Football Club. He went to the dentist to have his teeth taken out, and they fitted seats instead.

vielha spainI finally met up with my route but The Lady etc etc had found me a route that seemed to be much shorter than mine so I followed that and ended up in Spain again.

She brought me to a town called Vielha and it’s a strange situation here because all the rivers flow north into France and we have the headwaters of the River Garonne here. The International boundary is not a watershed as you might think.

And as an aside, here I was stopped for a spot-check by a Spanish Police road patrol.

valle de aran vielha spainThe Lady Who etc etc had designs on sending me up the Valle de Aran, so it seemed. That’s a huge ski area with loads of faciiities, and the road up there goes through passes at well over 2000 metres. Ahh well – in for a penny, in for a pound.

But it wasn’t to be. About 15kms up the road and well into the snow, we encountered a sign “closed to all vehicles not equipped with chains” – and even local 4×4 drivers were chaining up for the route. They know the area so much better than I do and they’ve been driving in snow for a lot longer than I have, so if they are chaining up, what chance do I have with Caliburn?

The Lady Who Lives etc etc was rather annoyed about me retracing my steps but discretion is the better part of valour.

We carried on south through the enormous Tunnel de Vielha – this road would have been so much fun to drive 30 years ago before the tunnel had been built, I reckon – and this brought me out on the southern side of the Pyrenees and, would you believe, into the sun.

She took me off the main road and we climbed up and up and up to the aptly-named Col de Perves, where Strawberry Moose stopped for a photo opportunity as you might expect. With a name like that, he just had to.

A few flakes of snow fell onto the camera lens, but nothing much to worry about. There was hardly a trace of snow on the ground anywhere around here.

Not so over there, though.

That was where I actually should have been – climbing up out of the Valle de Aran and over the top to the town of Sort which is just on the other side of those mountains over there. This was turning into something of an enormous detour.

col de perves spainAnd if you thought that the climb up the Col de Perves was exciting, the descent was even more so.

The town of Perves is situated just below the summit and there is a track from there that leads straight downhill – clearly back before the days of the motor-car the peasants were a hardy lot – but for modern vehicles there’s a road something like this – and several good kilometres of it too. Where I’m standing is about half-way down but it’s the first good photo opportunity where there is some kind of parking.

col de perves spainBy now though the weather has considerably brightened up and I was really enjoying the day, had it not been for this raging toothache that was putting the dampers on just about everything.

And we hadn’t finished with the mountains yet either.

We ended up climbing up a mountain pass or two via a road that was barely wide enough to take Caliburn and that was exciting when we met a couple of vehicles coming the other way. But once we arrived in Sort (about two hours after the time I should have been here) the rest of the journey was comparatively straightforward. A couple of mountain passes to be sure, but we are on N-roads, the equivelent of A-roads in the UK and I arrived at my ultimate destination, the little country of Andorra, without further ado.

But this toothache is driving me berserk and I went straight to bed, where I promptly crashed out, and that was that.

Thursday 14th November 2013 – THIS BLASTED RAIN …

… is getting on my nerves. It’s rained non-stop for all of the day and that has put the dampers on everything.

It didn’t help that I had a bad night’s sleep. I woke up in the middle of the night with a severe attack of cramp in both legs and that took ages to pass. A short while afterwards it was the raging toothache that kept me awake for hours. I wasn’t therefore in the best of moods.

After breakfast I did some more tidying up in here – there wasn’t much point in going outside until the rain eased off – and another couple of loads of things have been moved downstairs. However I did manage to get into the barn to continue to sort things out in there, and I’m having a puzzled moment or two, because i’ve mislaid one of my tool boxes – not the big red Snap-on toolbox but a smaller red one in which I keep the duplicate tools. I can’t think where that might be for now – I hope that I haven’t left it at Cécile’s.

I’ve also moved a few more things out of Caliburn, such as the suitcases, the clean washing and the food. That means that there’s some room inside there now. But I had a light bulb go on suddenly in my head. I liberated an old soft suitcase from Marianne’s ages ago and I couldn’t think of why I did so, and so yesterday I put it in the dustbin (not like me, I know, but …). Now I remember, though. I’ve acquired (also from Marianne’s) an old quilt and some cushions and I’m going to keep them in Caliburn whenever I’m on my travels, seeing as these days I can’t keep awake as long as I used to be able to. I already keep a towel, my swimming cozzy and some shower stuff in the van. To keep all of that together and not rolling about all over the place, a suitcase may well come in handy.

I didn’t get into the garden though – there wasn’t much point with all of the rain, and while you can’t see much improvement in the barn, I know that I can because I remember what it used to look like.

Sunday 13th March 2011 – The things I do …

…to get out of working on a Sunday!

The toothache kept me awake all through Saturday night and so in the end I tracked down the Dentiste du Garde and booked an appointment. Earliest that I could get was 10:00. Ahh well! When Liz came into the kitchen she took one look at my face and burst out laughing – the left side had swollen up like a balloon.

Anyway, off to the dentist’s I went. All the way to the back of Ixelles. I was there by 09:40 (no traffic on the roads) and I was out at 10:00. He cut open the tooth (no anaesthetic but it made no difference as the tooth is thoroughly dead and I didn’t feel a thing), pulled out the infected root, and that was that. Of course, with the emergency dentists there is no finesse or subtlety – it’s pretty much production-line dentistry but it was better than nothing.

Back home and with no pain at all, relatively speaking, I crashed out for an hour or two while Terry and Liz painted the woodwork in the new bedroom. I woke up at about 14:00 and pottered around to help out for a couple of hours, and then crashed out again. 20:00 that was,

Saturday 12th March 2011 – I’ve had the raging toothache all day

And I’m probably going to have it all night too, which is a shame. But never mind, at least it’s Sunday so when I do eventually go to sleep I don’t have to wake up so early.

But today for just a change we worked a full day. The bedroom ceiling that we painted looked really good and it has come out well. And so then I did the back wall of the rear terrace and that’s good too. Terry busied himself by starting to move the furniture out, and that’s a good sign.

After Liz and I had painted the bedroom walls and let it dry, we did a quick inspection. And that’s pretty good too and ordinarily we would have knocked off then and there. But with the bedroom looking so good we took an executive decision and decided to paint the woodwork in there too. And that was where the time went.

Tonight the staff clamoured for a pizza and so we went to La Carrettera in Jette. I could only manage a pasta in home-made garlic sauce as I’m having a bit of difficulty chewing things right now. I hope I’ll feel better tomorrow.

Tomorrow should be a day of rest but I have a sneaky feeling that Liz will want to put the second coat of gloss onto the woodwork in the bedroom.

Ahhh well.
