Monday 2nd January 2017 – THE FIRST SNOWS OF WINTER …

leuven first snow belgium january janvier 2017… has covered our land during the night.

It might not be much by Canadian standards, or by German standards or even by Auvergnat standards, but it’s the first snows all the came and at least it made me smile. I was wondering whether I might miss out this year, but here we are.

I thought that it was cold last night.

And I had another bit of a bad night too. It took me ages to drop off to sleep and then we had party-time again for an hour or so round about 01:00.

During the night I’d been on my travels too. I’d been fixing a van (but not Calibuen – a big white Iveco-type) and I’d gone out for a test drive in it, even though it only had three wheels and the fourth corner was propped up on a trolley jack. When the van came back to the garage the trolley jack was still there under the van but in a different place. There was a girl featuring in this dream too but I’ve no idea who she was. But she was quite familiar.

The alarm went off at 07:00 and I was quickly upstairs for breakfast. And I wasn’t alone either – there was a middle-aged couple breakfasting there and I didn’t recognise them at all.

But there will not be too much of any of this tonight though, because unless I’m very much mistaken I’m here on my own tonight. It’s 22:20 and there’s not one other person in the building. The noisy neighbours have definitely gone (the cleaner was doing heir room this afternoon), but they don’t seem to have informed the boy who comes to see them because he was knocking on their door just now.

belgium january janvier 2017After breakfast I had a shower and then walked up to the hospital. And I felt sorry for the wildlife as their lake is all frozen over and the poor birds don’t know what to do. Yes, it was that cold.

I was early-ish in the reception, and quickly dealt with. They soon packed me off downstairs to the waiting room.

And wait I did, because they forgot me, and it was not until 11:15 – 45 minutes after my appointment time – that I was seen.

And the long and the short of it is that I don’t have to come back for, would you believe, four weeks. My protein count is up slightly to 2.04 but my blood count has rocketed up to 11.7, all on its own and after the low figures for the last couple of visits, that figure can’t be right. But they think it is, and hence the attempt to try me for four weeks without a visit.

I’m not going to go home though, even though I would like too. It costs me €400-odd at least to make a trip home and back, and then there’s the fatigue and the inconvenience in the middle of winter. I’ve paid to stay here until the end of February and it’s warm-ish in here, there’s breakfast provided and it’s convenient. I don’t need to go very far from here.

All in all, it’s a good idea to stay and so here I’ll sit. It’s a shame but there we are. No sense in throwing good money after bad.

For tea tonight I had the leftover vegetables with a tin of couscous vegetables and a bit of tomato sauce. Followed by Christmas pudding and custard. Now I’m ready for an early night.

if I do end up on my own tonight, i’ll hope to have a good night’s sleep. And then I need to think of a cunning plan for the next few weeks.

Sunday 1st January 2017 – IT’S 2017!

And so Happy new Year to all of my readers – both of you! And may I wish you for 2017 everything that you wished for everyone else in 2016.

And if that applies to me, then you won’t have another blog posting from me after what I wished on my housemates last night and this morning. I’ll have been struck down by a thunderbolt. It was 03:30 when they came back in and then we had the party.

Unfortunately, I was rather late going off to bed and found it really difficult to go to sleep. And then we had all of this too. I did however manage to drop off to sleep at some time during the night though because the alarm woke me up at 07:00. And in a rather childish, petulant fit of revenge I made more than a little amount of noise making breakfast etc.

Down here I had a few things to do but about 09:00 I began to feel as if I had had a really bad night so I closed my eyes. And that was that, I’m afraid, until would you believe 12:23. Yes, gone with the wind I was.

And while I didn’t go on any nocturnal rambles during the night, I had a visitor while I was away with the fairies during the morning. A young girl whom I know, Zero, who used to feature frequently in my nocturnal rambles at one time, came to visit me. I wonder what brought her to mind after all this time.

The lunchtime loaf was wonderful, as I expected, and then I wandered off down to Caliburn to bring back some more stuff. After all, I need to clean myself up ready for the hospital tomorrow .

I’ve also spent a lot of time on my 3D program – the company that hosts it was having a sale and piles of stuff were on offer at just $0:30. And I hadn’t treated myself to a Christmas present yet this year.

Tea was pizza tonight, seeing as it’s Sunday. I used the small oven and it cooked everything properly, even though the pizza needed twice as long as recommended. I’d polished off all of the garlic bread by the time that the pizza was cooked.

So now it’s another early night, although I’m not all that tired. And I wonder what my housemates will be up to later.

Sooner I find my own place to live, the better.

Saturday 31st December 2016 – NOW I REMEMBER …

… why it is that I moved to the countryside when I retired from work.

I have a whole new raft of house mates and I was out as early as 19:30 to ask them to turn the volume down. God knows what it’s going to be like by morning.

new years eve leuven city centre belgium december decembre 2016tonight though, I walked up to the city centre to see what was going on. And it’s flaming tqters out there tonight. Not quite as clod as it was last night, but taters none-the-less.

And my walk up into the city was relatively quiet and there didn’t seem to be too many people on the streets as I left here. But the closer that I approached the city centre, the closer I came to the madding crowd.

new years eve leuven city centre belgium december decembre 2016You remember on Christmas Eve that the Grote Markt was pretty empty and I was quite disappointed by that. But tonight was a completely different kettle of fish, which was something of a surprise.

So much so that they had crowd control barriers controlling admission into the square, as well as a whole raft of security guards frisking everyone who tried to enter the Square

new years eve leuven city centre belgium december decembre 2016As for me; well you know that I have issues about all of what is laughably called security and being searched. I found an entry where the people in charge were more … errr … relaxed.

But it wasn’t worth the trouble as far as I was concerned. The Grote Markt was pretty packed, and becoming more tightly packed every minute, and there was one of these discos blasting away right in the centre. Not my cup of tea at all.

new years eve leuven city centre belgium december decembre 2016So I made my excuses and left, and went for a long walk around the city.

It took me about an hour to walk everywhere that I was going. There were plenty of people about, including several who had obviously been a little too close to the barmaid’s apron.

I thought that I had left all of that behind in the UK but apparently not, so it seems.

new years eve leuven city centre belgium december decembre 2016And so I turned around and trudged my weary way homewards, where for the moment it seems to be all quiet. But I’m not holding out too much hope.

At least it gives me a peaceful opportunity to write up today’s blog without too many interruptions. I’m not sure how long it’s going to last – I hope that my new housemates move away tomorrow and go back home. I don’t like company as you know.

new years eve leuven city centre belgium december decembre 2016While you admire the remainder of this evening’s photographs, let me tell you that last night was quite a bad night as far as I was concerned.

It tok me ages to drop off to sleep and then I kept on waking up all the way through. I didn’t really have anything like a decent night’s sleep. Mind you, I must have gone to sleep at some time or other because the alarm awoke me bang on time.

new years eve leuven city centre belgium december decembre 2016I was alone at breakfast, and then came down here to carry on with some more 3D stuff. In accordance with my new resolution from yesterday, I attacked another aspect of the program – object editing.

With this, I can edit clothes, props and accessories in order to make my scenes more realistic. And later, I can have a go at creating my own objects – although that’s something for the long term.

WHat I did wasn’t all that successful, but at least it’s a start. Knowing that you aredoing somethingwrong is the first step to doing it correctly of course.

I went up town later this morning to the Delhaize to do some shopping for the weekend. Including another one of those beautiful loaves that I bought last week.

This afternoon I crashed out for awhile, did a few bits and pieces and then cooked tea, in the midst of the hordes of people who were also trying to cook. It’s a good job that I have my own pans and so on.

Although everything was cooked properly, the roast spuds weren’t roasted as much as I would have liked them to be. The sprouts though were delicious as you can imagine.

After a little rest, I headed off up town for my appointment with destiny. And you know the rest.

We’ll see how things pan out tonight and tomorrow morning. But with all of this noise and celebration, i really do wish that I was back at home

Friday 30th December 2016 – JUST FOR A CHANGE …

… I’ve been out and about this afternoon.

But it was something of a bad night for me. I had all the good intentions of going to bed early but just as I was settling down, Paul Rhys came on the radio.

I mentioned the other day about him – the BBC’s 3-episode series of hour-long episodes of The Saint and what excellent programmes they are and how I can listen to them all night. Sure enough, one of them came on the air just as I was settling down and so I stayed awake to listen.

I had no change of sleeping after that and so I lay awake for ages. I must have gone to sleep somehow because it was the alarm that rocked me out of my reverie.

This morning I’ve been playing around with my 3D program and I’m going to have to expand my knowledge now that I have a computer that will enable me to progress. And to find more time too because I almost missed my lunch, I was that engrossed.

After lunch I prettied myself up a little because Alison came round and we went off for a coffee and a good chat to catch up on our respective news. She also bought me a tray of baked beans, some more gravy granules, some malt vinegar and some other stuff too. Now I’m going out to buy some frozen oven chips (well, not now, I mean that now I have beans and malt vinegar) and some vegan sausages so I can vary my food intake.

I’ve also been planning on microwaved potatoes for a change too. Anything to have a varied diet.

Later this evening I had a chat with Liz on the internet and I finished off my curry. My new housemates were in the kitchen too cooking tea. It’s quite exciting in there now.

So now I’m going to try yet again for an early night. Let’s see how we manage with that.

Thursday 29th December 2016 – TODAY WAS ALMOST …

… a carbon copy of Tuesday, except that I was on my own all day today.

It took me quite a while, and several attempts, to drop off to sleep despite having an early night. But once I’d gone, that was that until about 06:45. I don’t even remember going on any nocturnal ramble either.

Early to breakfast yet again, and then I had a nice hot shower and shave to try to liven me up a little. Of course, that’s quite an impossibility, as I am the first person to admit, but at least it makes me smell nicer – for the first half-hour or so anyway.

Now that I have the new laptop I had a big play around with my 3D program this morning and I was so carried away that it wasn’t until 12:30 that I noticed the time. That meant a quick trip to the supermarket, whee I seemed to be some form of amusement to two 8 year old girls, although I’m not too sure why.

After lunch I had a good go on my website. There’s quite a bit of stuff that I’ve been able to glean from the Dillon Wallace unpublished notes – stuff that seems not to have made it into the recorded history of North West River and the Hamilton Inlet. I shall be adding it to my stuff so as to make sure that its memory is brought forward into the modern world.

Another thing that I did, which seems to be becoming far too much of a habit these days, is to crash out. And I was away for quite a good while – it was 19:18 when I awoke in fact, so that was quite a good one.

Tea tonight was another dollop of my potato and chick pea curry and the longer it stands, the better it tastes. The last helping is for the weekend and the spices should have well-soaked in by then.

I’m not alone here tonight either. There’s a family of middle-aged people and at least one daughter in her late teens – and there’s someone else moving around in the building too. I hope that they are going to be quiet and well-behaved.

Wednesday 28th December 2016 – HIS NIBS …

strawberry moose josee constant leuven belgium december decembre 2016… made a new acquaintance today.

My housemate from Montreal was leaving today and Strawberry Moose wanted to say goodbye to her. We all went up to the kitchen and while she had her breakfast, I had a coffee and we all had a good chat – making a provisional arrangement to meet up some time in Brussels before she flies back to Canada

The reason why I didn’t have breakfast then was because I’d already been upstairs for breakfast. At 07:00 as it happens because I’d had a very early start.

I was asleep quite early and although I had to leave the comfort and safety of my stinking pit once or twice, I was deeply in the arms of Morpheus until 06:00. And then I was wide awake, and awake to such an extent that I was working away on the laptop when the alarm went off.

And I’d been on my travels too. Working for the EU in Brussels in fact. And I had my own personal staff too – a girl of about 14, Polish with long blond hair down to her waist who was my housekeeper (and who reminded me very much of a girl with whom I was at school) and another guy who was my driver/handyman etc. And it was long after 09:00 and I was really late for work, and the boss wanted to speak to me (which summed up something that really did happen on one occasion).

After breakfast I spent about an hour trying to find some documents that weren’t where I expected them to be. And in the end, after much binding in the marsh I discovered them. So now, that’s everything that I think needs to be transferred over. Now I can start to file away all of the stuff that I no longer need.

Before lunch I went into town to do the shopping at Delhaize, and forgot the carrots that I wanted to buy. And so for tea (because one of the portions of curry was rather light) I made some garlic bread with the left-over half-baguette from last weekend.

This afternoon, I crashed out again for a good hour and was well away with the fairies. actually, it’s rather worrying that I can’t keep on going and that I’m feeling like this. This idea that’s going through the back of my mind about finding another place to live is not going to happen too soon.

So having had tea and done the washing up, I’m going for an early night. I need it, I reckon.

Tuesday 27th December 2016 – I’VE HAD A BAD …

… day today.

And I’ll tell you how bad my day was if I just mention that today I was invited to go for a good walk around the Ardennes with a quite attractive Canadian lady from Montreal- and I was obliged to decline the opportunity.

With having no neighbours, once I managed to drop off to sleep (which was not very easy) I was asleep until the alarm went off.

I’d been on my travels too – to the border country between England and Wales where I was to meet a businessman whom I know, but instead I fell in with his wife. We discussed all kinds of things that related to her husband’s business and I could easily identify an opening for my wife. After all, she had worked for the Tax office and the DHSS (which of course she hasn’t) and this opportunity was made for her. In fact, another opportunity raised its ugly head during the discussion which would have been ideal for a friend of mine – the one whom is often described on these pages as “The One That Got Away”. As a result, Nerina and I were on a bus heading into the centre of Oswestry and I pointed out to her where to alight – at the Adecco Employment Agency. The only slight problem with that though is that whoever I was wasn’t Nerina, and neither was it “The One That Got Away” either. No idea who it was, actually.

So after breakfast and my chat with my neighbour, I sat down with the new laptop and had a play with my 3D program. And I’m pleased to say that the speed and capacity of the new laptop mean that I can do so much more, and do it more quickly too, and that’s why I bought it in the first place.

I did make it out too – but only just to the supermarket on the corner for some bread for lunch. And now I’ve run out of lunchtime stuff (except the lettuce) so it’s a big shop tomorrow.

This afternoon I worked on my website and crashed out for well over an hour too. I was right out of it for about half an hour too when I awoke. i’m clearly not too well.

But by the time I went to make tea I was feeling much better. And we had a huge chick pea and potato curry. It was absolutely delicious and there’s enough for another three nights too. I followed it up with Christmas pudding and custard and that’s delicious too.

Now I’m going to have another early night – I hope that it’s yet another good one.

Monday 26thDecember 2016 – WELL!

I went to bed last night at some kind of fairly respectable time, prepared for the onslaught at 04:00.

Next thing that I remember was that it was the alarm going off at 07:00, and a deafening silence from the next room. It seems that the bane of my existence here has moved on, especially as the cleaner was in there changing the bedding today (and I have new bedding too).

I was alone at breakfast and then I came down here to carry on with my file transfers. And it’s going on and on and on with no end in sight because there is so much to do, and I keep on forgetting half of it.

In addition, I’ve downloaded a few programs that I need and I’ve been through removing duplicate files and the like. Both drives have been scanned for adware, viruses and all of the like and I’ve removed almost 10GB of useless files from the old laptop’s hard drive. That’s made it go a little faster too (but only a little).

My Montreal housemate was here this afternoon and we had another chat. As well as that, another couple of new housemates arrived. They look sensible enough do I hope that they live up to it.

For tea, I had another big meal like last night and followed that at last with some Christmas Pudding and soya custard. Absolutely delicious, fit for a King.

You’ll notice that I haven’t said anything about going out. That’s because I haven’t. Not a foot. It’s a bit of a shame but that’s how it is. I’ll go for a walk tomorrow instead.

Now I’m having an early night, and I hope that I’ll have another really good sleep like last night.

I enjoyed that.

Sunday 25th December 2016 – SMAKELIJK!

Having worked to death the Crewe Bus Station toilets “Merry Christmas to all our readers” thing continuously over the past few years, we’ll talk about something else this year.

roast potatoes boiled carrots chicory leeks brussels sprouts onions seitan gravy christmas dinner leuven belgium december decembre 2016Like my Christmas dinner for example. Roast potatoes, boiled potatoes, carrots, chicory, leeks, seitan slices, onions, gravy and, of course, brussels sprouts. No Christmas meal is complete without them of course – properly cooked and not at all into a mush like most people cook them.

And it was absolutely delicious too, even if I had forgotten to add the garlic.

There was supposed to be Christmas pudding and soya custard for afters, but Alison had bought me a vegan chocolate Santa, and so that went down instead, washed down by a can of that alcohol-free raspberry beer.

Last night, we had the party at 05:00 but with my headphones on, I managed to avoid the worst of it. And it only lasted about half an hour anyway before boyfriend was escorted to the door.

And I was on my travels too. In some kind of Dragnet circumstance with two people, nominally police officers, but chauffeurs at where I worked. We had to go somewhere and we were told that we were to avoid a certain street which had now been converted into a dead end. So we set off, with me driving in an early 1950s Ford-type of sedan coloured a duck-egg blue and pale yellow. And sure enough, I missed the turning and ended up just where I’d been told where not to go. With two of us at the front and one at the rear, we picked up the car (which was now shaped like a canoe) and man-handled it through a tone-lined pond onto the main road. There, I pulled a bunch of weeds out of a garden there and was immediately confronted by the owner of the property who hadn’t wanted me to do that.

christmas lights grote markt leuven belgium december decembre 2016And so while you admire the rest of last night’s photographs, I can tell you that I was alone an breakfast, where there was nothing special arranged for the tenants.

And then down here, I unwrapped my Christmas presents.

Alison’s chocolate Santa I’ve already mentioned. But me, I bought myself a new laptop.

christmas lights grote markt leuven belgium december decembre 2016Actually, I bought it last year but what with one thing and another, I hadn’t opened it.

It’s another Acer, but a larger one with a numeric keypad and DVD player, and twice as much RAM as before.

You know that this one is not very good – it’s the slowest machine that I’ve ever used. It’s very lightweight and very economical, but the lack of speed was really getting on my nerves.

christmas lights grote markt leuven belgium december decembre 2016Transferring the files over is taking ages though. Not because it’s taking so much time (although it is) but I’m taking the opportunity to tidy up all of the directories while I’m about it.

It might be finished by tomorrow – who knows – and then I’ll have to start to clean up the storage issues that I have. I can save tons of space if I organise myself properly.

christmas lights grote markt leuven belgium december decembre 2016While I was making my butties at lunchtime (that’s a nice loaf that I have bought) I made the acquaintance of one of my housemates.

She’s a woman from Montreal, the Henri Bourassa area of the city, and so we had quite a lengthy chat (in French) about this and that. It was nice o remind myself of the city, seeing as how I’n not sure if i’ll ever be making it back there.

christmas lights grote markt leuven belgium december decembre 2016This afternoon I carried on with the new laptop and had a nice chat with Liz and her family on the laptop. Strawberry Moose joined in the discussion too, telling Dylan and Robyn how much he was looking forward to meeting up later next year.

And then, I went off to make my delicious tea.

Before I go off to bed for an early night, let me just tell you a little about something that I discovered last night.

Leuven is a really beautiful medieval Flemish city as you have probably seen, but 103 years ago, it was even more beautiful.

All of that changed in August 1914 when the Germans arrived, and in accordance with their policy of “Frightfulness” they set fire to the city centre, even burning the contents of the library that contained many of the oldest books in Europe.

And then in May 1940, they burnt it down again.

Many people, including, unfortunately, some of my acquaintances, criticise the French and the Belgian civilians for what they consider to be a “lack of resolution” in confronting the German Army

Leaving aside the fact that at least they were here, unlike the British Army that ran away across the Channel at Dunkirk, and the lack of resolution shown in the German occupied British territories such as the Channel Islands, where the civilian population sat it out with a German occupying force for 10 months after the War had passed them by, the British civilians never had to confront the issues that the French and Belgian citizens had to confront.

We’ve seen in the past the gravestones of civilians who died during both wars – gravestones marked “shot” or “executed” or “decapitated”. No British or American civilian ever had to confront that kind of treatment.

memorial plaque grote markt leuven belgium december decembre 2016Here in the Grote Markt in Leuven is this plaque with a list of names carved thereupon. 16 names, all civilians who were deliberately killed by the Germans in August 1914 as they were setting fire to the buildings of the Square.

This is the kind of thing that you find all over Belgium and France. Never mind being casual, haphazard victims of a bombing campaign or artillery duel, these civilians were simply purposefully murdered while going about their normal day-to-day duties and was a risk that every citizen in Occupied Europe had to run.

There was no escape.

Anyway, on that note, I’m off to do my washing up and then I’m off to bed. Will I have a good night tonight?

Saturday 24th December 2016 – WHILE YOU ADMIRE …

city lights christmas eve brusselsestraatleuven belgium december decembre 2016… the city of Leuven and its Christmas illuminations, I’ll tell you about the day that I’ve had today.

Most importantly, I went out for a walk this evening. It’s been quite a while since I’ve been for a stroll out at night – probably since I was in Montreal in October, and seeing as it’s Christmas Eve tonight, it seemed to be a good-enough opportunity.

city lights christmas eve brusselsestraat leuven belgium december decembre 2016One thing that I haven’t done since I’ve been in Leuven to show you where I’m staying.

It’s in the Brusselsestraat, which used to be the main way out of the city before the Motorway link road was built, and on the corner of the Kruisstraat. And that’s the building just down there on the left, on the corner after the third street light.

My room is on the first floor, on the left hand corner at the rear, with a window at the rear overlooking the garden.

city lights christmas eve leuven belgium december decembre 2016And so as for last night – a total disaster.

Someone in here was “entertaining” and the beds creak like nobody’s business, as I might have mentioned before. I was all for giving them a round of applause but of course it’s impossible to clap with just one hand as you know.

And then we had the party.

city lights christmas eve leuven belgium december decembre 2016About 02:00 they started, and it wasn’t until about 04:00 that they finished.

I’d been asleep, having had an early night until they started, and I gave up any idea of going back there once they had started. By 02:30 I was working on the laptop. I may as well make the most of all of my discomfort. No point in missing out on the time that I had unexpectedly been given

city lights christmas eve leuven belgium december decembre 2016I went back to sleep shortly afterwards and that was that until the alarm went off. And rather petulantly, I didn’t turn off the alarm for quite a while. And likewise with the reminder. I let it ring for a few minutes

After breakfast I went and had a shower. I didn’t wait until everyone was awake like I usually do – I went straight in regardless of the noise that the shower makes in the bathroom.

I was in something of a bad mood, wasn’t I?

city lights christmas eve leuven belgium december decembre 2016For much of the morning I was researching stuff again for my stuff on Labrador. And I came across some work by a certain Rudy Mauro, someone who had gone out (in a helicopter) to the site of where Leonidas Hubbard, about whom we’ve talked on many occasions, had died during his ridiculous “exploration” of Labrador’s interior where he had starved to death after being “out” for only a few weeks.

He also had amongst his papers some notes by Dillon Wallace, he who accompanied Hubbard and who went back to complete his work, and which were previously unpublished.

city lights christmas eve leuven belgium december decembre 2016Later on I went out to the shops and to the market. I bought everything that I had written down on my list, but something that I had subsequently remembered that I needed, I even more subsequently forgot.

And worse was yet to come, because the vegan shop had sold out of the spray-on vegan cream. It means that I’m going to have to eat my mince pies “dry” and that’s a tragedy. I was rather looking forward to my special little treat.

city lights christmas eve leuven belgium december decembre 2016I carried on working this afternoon, as well as having a little doze too (which I reckoned that I needed), as well as keeping up-to-date with Morton’s game with Queen of the South.

That all took me up to tea time when i finished off the last of my curry. But it was rather difficult making my tea tonight as my current lot of housemates don’t seem to understand the necessity of cleaning up and washing up after them.

The sooner I can find a place of my own the better.

city lights christmas eve leuven belgium december decembre 2016But then I went off for my walk up town in the evening.

What surprised me was that there was no-one about. Well – that’s not necessarily true. What I mean was that in most other cities the centre would be heaving and there woud be all kinds of things going on – and that was what I was hoping – carol singers and all of that.

grote markt city lights christmas eve leuven belgium december decembre 2016But as you can see from a photo of the Grote Markt – there are very few people wandering around here and nothing in the way of entertainment. It was all rather disappointing.

And so instead I came back home.

It’s now Christmas Day and I’m celebrating with a can of alcohol-free raspberry beer that I bought from Noz in Montlucon the other week.

And now I’m off to bed, if my housemates will let me, and I’ll show you the rest of my photos tomorrow.

Friday 23rd December 2016 – I HAD ANOTHER …

… depressing day today.

Having crashed out on and off for quite a while yesterday, it was ages before I could drop off to sleep. And thenwe had the usual door-slamming incident in the small hours.

Not only that, I had to leave my bed a couple of times during the night and I’ve not had to do that for a while either.

After breakfast I was researching some stuff on Labrador for a while and then round about 10:30 I set off.

Going via Caliburn to drop off my large bag, I went on to the Carrefour near the football ground. And now, I’ve stocked up with vegetables for Christmas. I have enough leeks and onions, but I bought some more spuds and carrots as well as some endives and, it goes without saying, some sprouts. It’s impossible to have a Christmas without any sprouts as far as I am concerned.

All that I need now is some spray-on vegan cream for my vegan mince pies and a loaf of bread for when the shops are closed. And some sweets too as a special treat. But all of that will be from up town tomorrow.

I brought some more stuff back up here from Caliburn, including my Christmas presents to me. I’ll have to wrap them tomorrow too so that they will be a surprise for when I open them.

This afternoon I had a play with the 3D program that I occasionally use. it’s been a while since I had it out and what I was trying to do didn’t work out so well.

Tea was another load of the curry that I made yesterday and seeing as there wasn’t as much as I would like, I added a carrot to the rice when I cooked it all. That bulked it up a little.

But one thing that did annoy me was that I’d bought a couple of tins of sliced green beans to eat with my pies – and I’d forgotten them. That’s just typical, isn’t it?

Now I’m going to bed, and I’m really hoping that I can have a good sleep. This door-slamming isn’t ‘arf getting me down.

Thursday 22nd December 2016 – I’VE HAD ONE OF THOSE DAYS …

… where I’ve been drifting in and out of wakefulness all day. For the most part, I was out of it completely.

I didn’t have too much of an early night last night, and to go with it, we had another door-slamming session, at 03:20 this morning. That made me sick as a parrot.

Although I managed to drop off to sleep, I was imagining that I was in a situation where people were talking in the distance. So much so that it awoke me and, sure enough, there were people talking in the distance in here, loud enough to keep me awake.

It was a struggle to go back to sleep after, but I did, and it was a real struggle to awaken when the alarm went off. And everywhere that I had been during the night, it immediately evaporated.

After breakfast I tried to catch up with the website and even though I made some progress, I couldn’t concentrate and eventually I crashed out. And that was how my day went today. Just in and out of sleep.

Later in the morning I managed to struggle down to Caliburn and I brought another load of stuff back up here. And at lunchtime I made it to the supermarket on the corner for my baguette.

Tonight, I made a big curry. Potato and mushroom, and there’s enough left over for the next txo days too. It really was delicious as well and while I didn’t put any bulghour in it, I threw in a handful of peanuts to give it an additional taste.

So let’s see how I get on with sleep tonight. I hope that no-one disturbs me for I really need a good sleep. I can’t go on like this.

Wednesday 21st December 2016 – HAPPY SOLSTICE EVERYONE

It’s hard to believe that after today, the nights start to become shorter. We’re at this time of the year already. Hasn’t the second half of the year gone by so quickly?

It’s also the first day of winter, so the least said about that, the better.

I was in Central Scotland with someone whom I knew back in my University days. We were attending college lectures and so seeing that I was with him, I followed him off to the public library for some books. He found everything that he needed, including a couple of books that I thought were largely irrelevant, but I took copies nevertheless. However for one course, I couldn’t find a suitable book, so I told him and some of hi friends, that I would share with him when it came to it.

That wasn’t all that I did during the night, but we had the early morning performance again, 06:15 this time, and much of the stuff melted away immediately.

And I didn’t have my early night either.

Well, I did, but just as I was settling down under the covers, “The Saint” came on the radio.

We all know Roger Moore and Ian Ogilvy from the television. And we all know Vincent Price and Tom Conway from the radio. But how many of you know Paul Rhys?

In the mid-1990s the BBC commissioned three 55-minutes radio plays of The Saint, starring Paul Rhys in the title role. And firstly, whoever wrote the scripts for the broadcasts deserves a medal because they really are excellent. And secondly, the voice of Paul Rhys has a hypnotic quality and I could even listen all night to him reading something quite banal, like the telephone directory perhaps.

And as I said, one of these programmes came onto the radio just as I was settling down.

I’ve no idea why the BBC didn’t extend the series because just three of these programmes is nothing like enough the explore the full range that the scriptwriter and the actors could offer.

I had another early breakfast and then did some stuff on the internet for quite a while, totally carried away with what I was doing. So much so that it was midday when I stopped. The weather had brightened up by then so I nipped down the road to Caliburn and came back with more stuff, including some clothes. I need a change of outfit and I’m running short of undies too.

Seeing as I had a free hand, I brought back His Nibs and now he’s ensconced on a corner of the bed where he’ll stay for a while.

After lunch I carried on with what I had been doing, but crashed out for an hour or so later on. I’m definitely getting old, aren’t I?

For tea tonight I had the second of my two pies with potatoes, carrots, leeks and gravy. And it was just as nice as last night. Now that I’m using the small table-top oven, it’s cooking quite nicely and i’ll have another go with a pizza in due course.

I’ll try again for another early night. But it doesn’t make much difference. I don’t seem to be able to last the pace these days.

Tuesday 20th December 2016 – I MADE SURE …

… that I dropped off early to sleep last night.

What I did was to do something that I hadn’t done for quite a while, and that was that I got into bed and started to watch a film on the laptop. Sure enough, after only about 10 minutes or so, I was off.

But if I ever lay my hands on whoever it was who left the building at 02:40 this morning, slamming the door behind them, they they will know about it. Because I didn’t go back to sleep afterwards.

And it was just as well because the girl in the room next door was up and about at 06:00 and she wasn’t exactly quiet either. But then you can’t pick your housemates, can you?

Anyway, I was in at breakfast at 07:00 and out by 07:30 and back down here at work.

Meanwhile, I forgot to tell you about a couple of things that happened to me at the hospital yesterday.

parking uz gasthuisberg leuven belgium december decembre 2016For the benefit of those who don’t speak French, the sign on the back of the Fiat van says “Please don’t park within 3 metres …” of the rear doors, to allow the rear doors to open to admit a wheelchair.

And so the car behind is parked within 1 metre of it – right outside the entrance to a hospital.

I went up to the driver and asked him if a sign has to be written in both official languages (French and Flemish) to be legal, but as you might expect, my comment went clear over his head.

As Alfred Hitchcock once said to Kenneth Williams “it’s a waste of time telling jokes to foreigners”, and reminds me of the spoof Open University course on “Understanding Irony”, which actually received several applicants.

But it’s a sad reflection of the selfish attitude of many Belgians, isn’t it?

But the second thing was even more unnerving.

I walked up to the reception desk and the woman looked at me and said “ahh, Mr Hall …” Yes, I’m even being recognised by the clerical staff in the hospital now. This is uncomfortable, isn’t it?

ginger beer dandelion and burdock vegan mince pies custard pies bombay mix, linda mccartney vegan pies bisto gravy browning english shop kortenberg bertem belgium december decembre 2016Another thing that I have forgotten to do is to post the photo of the stuff that I bought on Sunday at the English shop.

Working clockwise around, we have Linda McCartney vegan pies, a vegan Christmas pudding, Bisto vegan gravy browning, a bottle of ginger beer, a bottle of dandelion and burdock, a bag of Bombay mix, some custard powder and, pride of place, two boxes of vegan mince pies.

Now I’m all set up for Christmas.

Later this morning I went down to Caliburn to sort out some stuff to bring up here and then went down to the Carrefour. I came back with a baguette and some tomatoes, some seitan slices (for Christmas dinner), some potatoes, some carrots and some leeks as well as a couple of pots of fresh spices.

That was because, for tea, I had boiled potatoes with fresh mint, carrots with fresh rosemary, leeks and Linda McCartney vegan pie covered in thick Bisto gravy. It made such a change from my usual fare and it was absolutely delicious. It all worked out fine too, much better than my pizza did. I shall be doing more of this, as well as looking at the possibility of baked potatoes in the microwave here.

High time that I was organised.

This afternoon I crashed out for a while and also did some work on my web pages.

Another thing that I did was to walk into the (unlocked) bathroom just as my nubile next-door neighbour was wrapping herself in a towel after her shower. Serves her right for not closing the door!

So now we’ll have another go at an early night. And I’ll hope for better luck too.

Monday 19th December 2016 – AND SO …

… I went to the hospital this morning.

But if you think that this was exciting, you should have been here last night, for what a night that was!

I had crashed out well-and-truly by 22:00 and apart from two brief awakenings I remember nothing whatever until about 06:30 when I awoke bolt-upright.

Saying that I remember nothing is perhaps an understatement. I was on my travels again – and how!

We (a little group of us) were in a hotel at the seaside – a large expensive kind of hotel too but our room was dreadful – just a couple of big double beds and no other facilities. All of our stuff was lying around on the floor, on the beds, and we were planning to leave, chucking-out time was 11:00 and all of our stuff was still lying all over the place wit no urgency whatsoever.
From here I was in a car with Alison (her debut appearance on my nocturnal voyages, I believe) and we were driving along Thanet Way talking about my mother’s two Aunts – Auntie Dolly an Auntie Gertie – who lived there (we actually did have a discussion like this on Saturday). Auntie Dolly lived in Birchington and Auntie Gertie lived somwhere just off Thanet Way and I couldn’t remember the Aunt who lived in Ham Street who had the cats called Katapus and Redpus (it really was Greypus and it was Aunt Mabel by the way). But we stopped at a row of terraced houses on an embankment at the side of the road and eventually found our way to the one that we needed. A couple of hippie-types lived there and they showed me to a room, which was a very poorly furnished ground-floor room with an unused front door. I waited there for quite some time but nothing was happening so I forced the door open and went outside. There was a very early Austin A30 (or was it a A35?) saloon there with no number plates, and at the end of the front garden was the drop to the road but I couldn’t work my way down the bank so I went back. By now, some other male person had occupied my bed and had a baby with him so I went back to the main room, said how much I liked the car. We then discussed fetching my stuff. I had some modern up-market computer stuff and I didn’t want to bring it in but they were encouraging me to do so, telling me what equipment they had which would work with it. But their stuff was all out-of-date and wouldn’t be compatible with mine, and so I declined the offer.

I was thoroughly exhausted when I awoke, and that was a bad sign. In fact I had taken my medication up to the kitchen and forgot to take them – shows you just how confused I was.

But anyway the wal, up to the hospital did me some good and I wasn’t the least bit worn out when I arrived.

The place was crowded with people today and we even had bread rolls with the soup, that made a change. And as for the results, my blood count has improved to 9.7 and the protein loss has “decreased” to 1.96 (it should of course be less than O.15).

The doctor who saw me – well, she can come and inspect my kidneys any time she likes – tells me that I have to stop taking my protein supplements. She’s wondering if my body can’t absorb the proteins and that’s why it’s being excreted. It’s noted that the amount has gone up since I’ve been taking the bulghour and gone down when I’ve been at home or elsewhere where I’ve not been taking it.

The psychologist came to see me too and we had a chat, but she doesn’t seem to be adding to what I already know about my condition or my general state of health.

The upshot of all of this is that I have to come back in 2 weeks – 2nd January 2017. I’ve been asked if I’m going back home for Christmas but I’ve decided to stay here instead.

Liz was on line later and we had a video chat. I took her on a guided tour of the building so that she now knows where I live and how I’m living. And then I crashed out for a bit.

For tea, I threw something together quickly, for I have plans for the next few days as far as food goes. And quite right too!

So now it’s another early night. And I hope that my travels are as exciting as last night’s.
