Saturday 12th April 2014 – SNATCHING DEFEAT FROM THE JAWS OF VICTORY …

… is the Pionsat 1st XI’s habitual method of play. But just for a change this evening, they snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. And if they had played for 90 minutes of every match with the same fire and spirit that they played the final 10 minutes of today’s match, they wouldn’t be anything like staring relegation in the face.

They won 4-3 with two goals coming in the final 10 minutes, and it’s just as well that they did, because being rlegated by losing to the Chimps of all people would have been more than any man could bear.

But the story of the three goals conceded sums up Pionsat’s season-

Pionsat concede penalty fcpsh fc pionsat st hilaire football club de foot montel villosanges 12 avril 2014 puy de dome ligue division 1 france

  1. A moment’s inattention and hesitation lets in a Chimps attacker. A beautiful sliding tackle from a Pionsat defender wins the ball and the attacker goes down over the defender’s outstretched leg. How the referee could award a penalty for that is something that totally mystified me.
But then, had the defence been awake and attentive, the defender would not have got that far.
  2. Unmarked attacker at the far post heads in a superb cross past Frederic who is once more standing in for Michael who has been standing in for Matthieu. It was indeed a superb cross, taking every totally by surprise, but there shouldn’t ever be anyone unmarked and onside in the penalty area.
It’s true that a more experienced keeper would probably come out for the cross, because as long as he got a fingertip to the ball, he could have flattened the attacker without fear of conceding a penalty, but you can’t blame a stand-in keeper for that, and it would have been worse if he had hesitated and been caught in no-man’s
    land

frederic poumerol good save fcpsh fc pionsat st hilaire football club de foot montel villosanges 12 avril 2014 puy de dome ligue division 1 franceAnd in any case, Frederic kept his team well in the game with a spectacular full-length diving save from a free kick halfway through the second half. Any regular keeper would have been proud of that effort
  3. A loose ball in a crowded penalty area. Frederic runs out for it, shouting “leave it” to his defence. Instead, one of his defenders passes it back to him.
With a defender touching it last, Frederic can’t pick it up and so has to kick. Surrounded by three Chimps, the result is inevitable

vianney brette scores 3rd goal fcpsh fc pionsat st hilaire football club de foot montel villosanges 12 avril 2014 puy de dome ligue division 1 franceSo from 2-1 up, they are now 3-2 down and with just minutes to go. Pionsat win a couple of corners and from one of them, Vianney rises highest and heads onto a post and bounces into the net for the equaliser, past the keeper’s outstretched fingertips.

But a point isn’t enough to keep their slim hopes alive -they need all three and there are just seconds left.

blond frederic scores 4th goal fcpsh fc pionsat st hilaire football club de foot montel villosanges 12 avril 2014 puy de dome ligue division 1 franceAnd then we have a most astonishing thing.

Pionsat win a free kick just inside the Chimps half, right out on the far touchline probably 50 yards from goal. Blond Frederic takes it and swings it high into the penalty area. The ball sails over everyone’s head right into the keeper’s hands … and right through the keeper’s hands into the net.

Stunned silence in the crowd and I’m not sure who was the most surprised – the keeper or blond Frederic. But a goal is a goal is a goal, and Pionsat finally manage to win after several weeks of lack of success.

If only they had done this a few weeks ago.

So this morning, another early start. And I was in Crewe during the night at my old taxi office in Wistaston Road (but a different one at the back of another car sales place). And I was to audition for another rock group and needed some equipment and so went to the music shop just down the road (that isn’t there of course) where I bumped into Zero and her father.

But after breakfast I cracked on with my website work and then at lunchtime went round to Cecile’s to see how things were and to pick up some mail seeing as how her redirection has finished – and taking advantage of her washing machine too.

Then into St Eloy to shop (where I bought some seeds that I needed) and to pay a huge pile of money to someone in a shop there. Yes, I’m going to be having a new toy – more of which anon.

After picking up my washing (and thinking that maybe I ought to mow Cecile’s lawn sometime soon) I came back here – and crashed out for 2 hours. And a deep sleep it was too for just a crash. I was back in Crewe again at a house that bore more than just a mere passing resemblance to the one in Davenport Avenue where I lived with my parents.

And so then the footy. I’ve had a busy day today.

But watch these pages over the course of the next few days.

Tuesday 8th April 2014 – WHAT A WAY TO START THE DAY

Downstairs nice and early for a change, and … no gas. It must have run out just as I finished cooking last night and I didn’t notice.

Good job I’d bought that cylinder the other week. First job this morning was to couple that up so that I could have a coffee.

After the website, second job was to empty the beichstuhl. Such delightful jobs I have here. And just to prove that it never rains but it pours, the shredder packed up. And why a shredder? The answer is that you need something to absorb liquids in a composting toilet and the best thing ever designed for that is old telephone directory pages. Works like a charm when it’s shredded and I wonder what I’m going to do now.

les guis virlet puy de dome franceNext thing was to check the state of affairs with the plants that I sowed the other week. I told you yesterday that a courgette plant was raising its pretty little head. So here’s a photo of it and its brother too, because we now have two courgette plants springing to life.

Still nothing doing in the carrots, parsnips and radish bed, but before lunch I sowed another row each, together with the beetroot seeds that I had soaking overnight

Talking of soaking overnight, I put pile of pea seeds in damp paper in a plastic bag. They’ll be okay in there for a while to help them germinate.

plastic greenhouse shelf unit seed traysles guis virlet puy de dome franceAfter lunch I carried on sowing and theres another pile of seeds now in the little plastic greenhouse helf thingy that I bought the other day.

It does occur to me that you haven’t seen it yet and so here it is in all its glory. You can see the bushes that I bought a couple of weeks ago, and all of the seeds that I’ve sown. In the plastic bag are the peas.

So what did I sow today?

  • Gherkins
  • Tomatoes
  • Sweet corn – but I’m not going to be optimistic about that. I found a packet with an expiry date of 2009 so if I was going to throw them away, I might as well throw them in the soil and see what happens

Thee was also quite a mixture of seeds floating around in the bottom of the box in which I keep the seed packets. Seeing as there’s an empty bed that won’t be used for a while, they all went in there and we’ll see.

herb bins les guis virlet puy de dome franceAfter all of that I started tidying up outside, seeing as there was still some time to go. You can now see the herb bins in their pristine glory before they are all overwhelmed again.

It doesn’t look much like I’ve done any tidying up, but there’s a lot to do as you might expect. I can see the difference, but I doubt if anyone else could.

I’ve also cleaned the old “Westwood” ride-on mower. An ex-friend of mine found this for me and I never ever had it running because there are some bits missing. It’s sat here and not mooved wince 2002. Anyway, some time next week, it’s going. Someone is coming to pick it up. And you won’t believe the story behind this – you’ll just have to wait.

But whatever did happen to Paul? He was the best friend I ever had and he would do anything for me any time without question, something for which I was eternally grateful (and it goes without saying that I returned the compliment). But then he had his accident and he was put on medication, and that changed him considerably.

Finally, they changed his medication for another and I just couldn’t cope at all with the new personality. We were in Birmingham once, trying to make out which way to turn when a car (not unsurprisingly) blew its horn. He was straight out of the car going to thump the other driver and it was at that moment that I realised that I couldn’t keep this up.

I have enough problems dealing with my own issues without thinking about dealing with anyone else’s.

What a shame.

Monday 1st July 2013 – THERE’S A HOLE …

hole in wall shower room les guis virlet puy de dome france… in my shower room wall. 48mm in diameter, 18 inches from the floor and almost (but not quite) all the way through to the outside, dear Liza, dear Liza.

. I took advantage of the absolutely beautiful summer’s day to power up the mega-SDS drill and carve a hole through to the outside to act as the air vent for the composting toilet – something that is quite important for not for nothing is this place known as Pooh Corner.

And if you were around a year or so ago when I took months to drill the hole through from the lean-to into the house, it took just four hours to end up a mere 9 centimetres from the outside wall … "and it’ll probably take you another year to do the rest" – ed.

So why didn’t I carry on and finish it?

The answer is simple. The core drills that I use for punching my way through stone are about 15 cms long and I have three extensions – a 6cm one, a 40cm one and a 60cm one – giving me 21cms, 55cms and 75cms respectively.

hole ssaw arbour stuck in SDS drill les guis virlet puy de dome franceWith the 60cm one and the core drill it would make short work of the 55cm walls but it is so heavy and awkward that I start off with the small one, then graduate to the middle one, and then I finish off with the larger one.

But damn and blast! Would you believe it (well, knowing me, you probably would), the 40mm extension is jammed solid into the chuck and try as I might, can I heck as like move it? .I was there for a good hour or so trying to extricate it from the chuck and  no luck at all.

Never mind for now, though.

I’m still impressed that I can run a 1400-watt SDS drill for four hours punching my way through blocks of Grès de Lapeize without even a hiccup. And with the fridge working too. And as well as having electrically-heated hot water to wash in afterwards.

That’s despite all of the doubters and prophets of doom that I had when I first started this project back in 1999.

And despite all of the criticisms that I’ve had to bear, from people whom I thought were friends but behind my back were having a nice little laugh at my expense with their friends in “a certain newsgroup”.

As you know, that was something that angered me intensely, as I have said before … "and at great length too" – ed.

Anyway, enough of me ranting.

By 18:00 I called it a day in the shower room and went outside. With the weedkiller that Liz gave me and the pressure sprayer that I bought on Saturday, I attacked the weeds again for an hour and a half.

They are looking quite sad after my last effort but we are promised sunshine until tomorrow night and so a second helping won’t go amiss.

I forgot to tell you about last night’s dream as well. I was in the EU offices in a long corridor with hordes of people trying to get through a turnstile into the inner sanctum of the building and it was taking hours. But there were two office of member states, Ireland being one of them and I can’t remember the other, and they had access through the rear of their offices into the interior of the building. I knew all of the girls who worked there so grabbing my friend, we went through the Irish Permanent Representation offices into the main part of the building, much to his surprise, the surprise of the girls there and the surprise of everyone else.
From there I was in an exam and I needed to remember the proportion of energy in the UK (at least I think that it was in the UK) generated by coal. I’d taken some papers with me into the exam and they had notes upon them (contrary to the rules) and I spent a few anxious moments looking through the papers, not finding what I wanted and wondering if it was indeed 18% or some other figure.

Friday 28th June 2013 – I’M BACK …

… in Pooh Corner right now and I’ll be staying the night here – the first time for months. And I can’t say that I’m sorry either. I’ve come to the conclusion that, such as it is (or isn’t), it’s my home and it’s where I really want to be.

But today has been something of a weird day all round and it carried on as it started off. A few years ago I had a really good friend, my best friend for I don’t know how many years. He always was a little weird (but that’s never been a problem because I like weird people anyway) but he had a very serious motorcycle accident in the mid 1990s and that did for him pretty much, I’m afraid. His condition deteriorated until a few years ago I could no longer cope with his unpredictable mood swings. He had two kids, a son who was totally bone-idle and a complete waste of time, and who yet was the apple of his eye, and a much younger daughter who he picked on incessantly and, quite often, gratuitously. Whenever she was alone and I was there, she used to tell me little things and we had some quite deep chats. I haven’t seen her for a number of years now and I’ve often wondered how she was getting along, yet last night, I was driving past their house and daddy opened the front door and there in the background was daughter. And I’m not quite sure why, but I found that little flash during last night’s dream to be extremely disturbing. It set the score for the rest of the day.

We had to go round to Bill’s old place at Le Quartier on our way to Montlucon to see Marianne and pick up a few things

But I was scratched to death by thistles, soaked by the long grass, bitten by fleas and walked on by a mouse, and all for next-to-nothing either.

And as the day drew on and on, the level of my humour and enthusiasm gradually ebbed away and I sank deeper and deeper into the pit. Not even seeing Terry at Brico Depot could cheer me up much.

I ended up being totally overwhelmed to the extent that I abandoned a trolley load of purchases (and my notebook with all of my notes, measurements and diagrams as I found out later) in the shop and came home.

I’m having a bad time right now, but there’s always tomorrow. It’ll start off all bright and sunshiney and we’ll all be happy.

And then watch some b@$t@rd come along and spoil it.

Tuesday 17th July 2012 – NOW THIS IS ASTONISHING!

You are probably wondering what the photo below is all about – but read on.

Now to cut a long story short … "hooray" – ed … Rosemary came round today to offer me some more help in the garden and as I had no tinned potatoes for the salad I asked her to pick up a tin or two on the way round.

Instead of tins, she appeared with a bag of new potatoes – and these needed cooking of course.

potato 400 watt vegetable steamer les guis virlet puy de dome franceIt was a glorious day – probably one of the best I have ever had as far as solar energy goes (and doesn’t that make a change just recently?) and it came to my mind that ages ago I had bought a 400-watt electric steamer – cooker.

I’d never used it although I remembered a few weeks ago saying that I would like to give it a run out some time or other in the near future. With all of this solar energy right now it seemed that the appropriate moment had arisen.

Result – 15 minutes later one perfectly-steamed pile of spuds. I’m well-impressed with this. This really is Progress with a capital P.

I remember one of my best friends (an ex-best friend now as it happens) taking the p155 out of me behind my back with all of his friends on the Land Rover forum about my plans to try a microwave oven here.

They spent a considerable amount of time calling me a few choice names and so on.

And while an electric steam-cooker is hardly a microwave, it’s still up there with the coffee machine and the electric fire that we have had running during the winter as signs that home comforts are perfectly achievable with my set-up.

As you also know, I’m running a 12-volt TV-cum-video player up here as well.

Yes, I absolutely hate being surrounded by negativity – it drags me right downhill. One of the (many) reasons why I left the UK.

Rosemary and I spent a few hours weeding and I’ve never seen the garden looking as good as this, that’s for sure. We even started to pull up the new spuds but that was a waste of effort – seems like my crop has disappeared.

rebuilding stone wall collapsed lean-to les guis virlet puy de dome franceAfter Rosemary left, I carried on with the wall of the lean-to. You can tell how much I did by looking at where the mortar is still grey and not white.

I’ve accomplished quite a lot there but there’s still plenty to go and I’m wondering if I’ll have enough stones. If not, I’ll have to go on the scavenge and see what I can find.

But the wall underneath is in a bad way – there are three large cracks running down it. Seeing this made me glad that when I made a brief start in repairing it all back 10 years ago I had made that strip of reinforced concrete underneath where the breeze blocks are.

That strip of concrete is embedding the horizontal beams of the floor and thus ties all of the thing together. But once the new bit is finished I can repoint all of the cracks.

I’ve also been attacking the hole that I’m trying to drill out, what with all of this electricity we had today, and I’ve grounded out with the circular drill bit.

Of course, I lent out my other extension to Rob, didn’t I

We finished the day with the hottest solar shower I have had for a long time, and it was gorgeous.

But as for starting the day – how about 06:35 for breakfast? When has that ever happened before?

Saturday 30th June 2012 – IT’S POURING DOWN …

… with rain outside.

The first time we’ve had a really decent downpour for a few days, and you can see how much I’ve become embedded into the local agricultural way of life with my potager – looking forward to the rainstorm.

This morning I slept through the alarms for a change. I was having a nice dream about a former friend and his family and it’s a long time since I’ve had a really pleaant dream.

But anyway after breakfast I did some more work on the laptop and then went out shopping.

I’ve bought a few new toys too. LIDL was selling Brother PC label-makers a while ago and I was tempted at €20 but I didn’t bite. Anyway, they were reduced to €10 today and so I grabbed one.

I also met Rosemary and we went to Cheze where they were selling 510-litre water butts for an incredible €32. Rosemary wanted one, and I’ve decided to buy two of them.

What I shall be doing with mine is that when I take the scaffolding down after I’ve finished the wall of the lean-to, I am going to put up some guttering to catch the water off the lean-to roof and sink a large tank into the ground to catch it all.

But meanwhile I can link these two together and use them as settling tanks with the take-off for the subterranean tank about half-way up the side. That will still leave 250 litres of water at the bottom of each tank.

If I put a tap at the bottom of the first tank, then I can use the water in there (which will be pretty dirty) for watering the vegetable plots. That will help empty the dirt out of the tank.

But I’m getting more and more fed-up of Brico Depot.

We went for the guttering for Rosemary’s barn yesterday but what they had on offer was all badly-damaged rubbish sold by surly staff.

At Bricomarche in Commentry she paid a little more but got everything she wanted and in pristine condition too.

There was some stuff that I wanted too but Brico Depot don’t sell it. They suggested a work-around, but that would cost a fortune.

However, Cheze had exactly what I needed. They also had an inner tube for my wheelbarrow, that has saved me a fortune on a new wheel.

Tomorrow I’m off out with Marianne. She did tell me where we are going but I have forgotten. I suppose that I will find out soon enough.

Saturday 4th February 2012 – THIS OUGHT TO SILENCE …

… a few of my critics.

But I bet that it won’t!

800 watt hajogen heater running off solar panels february les guis virlet puy de dome franceYes, it’s a halogen heater with two bars – that’s 800 watts – quite happily burning away this afternoon in my attic.

Considering that it’s the middle of winter, receiving more than 200 amp-hours (that’s over 2.5 kw) of solar energy must be something of a record and with the batteries fully-charged by 10:00 I had to do something with the surplus energy – solar-heated water might be fun but I felt like being adventurous.

At first I ran the heater at 400 watts but at the peak time (between 13:00 and 14:00) I ran it at 800 watts and the system took it quite happily.

I was quite impressed of course.

My next step now is to find a small microwave oven, and to cook my tea in it. You all know the reason behind this story.

For the benefit of those who don’t, a coule of years ago I was sharing my thoughts about running a microwave oven in here with someone whom I thought was a good friend. And what he did after this was to post the details of this chat into an internet discussion forum of which he was a member so that they could all have a good laugh about it and call me some rude and offensive names.

Of course, no friendship can remain after that kind of behaviour. And I am determined to prove them wrong.

This morning the temperature in here was just 9°C – rather disappointing because last night was quite warm outside, just a mere -14.1°C.

It was far too cold to go outside and work this morning of course and so I stayed in, had the halogen heater on and read a book or two. The room slowly warmed up (and I mean slowly) but with halogen heat, it heats a person pretty quickly and I was quite comfortable here with that

tidying bedroom ceiling les guis virlet puy de dome franceAfter lunch (durng which I encountered the likes of deep-frozen tomato) I carried on with the ceiling in the bedroom, seeing as there was no shopping to do today (I’d dealt with that in Montlucon yesterday).

That kept me busy for a couple of hours right up until 18:00 and then I knocked off. I’d done enough down there and I was freezing.

And so I came up here and lit the fire.

Tea at 21:00 was agony. Minus 8 in the verandah and everything was frozen to everything else. Outside we had -13°C and that was at 21:50 – I shudder to think what it might be now.

Monday 16th January 2012 – THE FIRST THING …

… that I did today was to empty the composting toilet.

I’ve been neglecting it for a few days, what with one thing or another.

And of course, once you get started you’ll be surprised at how many other things there are too. But the composting toilet did need to be emptied, such is the exciting life that I lead these days.

Second job was to cut a mound of wood.

I’ve been running the pile down this last week or two while I’ve been waming myself and cooking with the new woodstove and so I set about sawing up a big load of wood which should keep me going for the next few weeks.

All done by hand with this new saw, and I’m almost as impressed with that as I am with my galvanised steel dustbin, which hasn’t featured anything as much as it deserves in these pages of late.

anemometer ls guis virlet puy de dome franceThird job was to rescue the old anemometer that was formerly mounted on the side of the house and which I had taken down when I had put the wind turbine up there.

This was sitting in the lean-to not doing very much at all but it’s now screwed to the fence by the front door.

The main reason why I put it back up is that its temperature gauge is much more accurate than the one that I’m currently using to measure the air temperature.

This afternoon, with the sun blazing down and the heater upstairs working flat-out, I reckoned that this is a bit silly. There is so much more that I ought to be doing with the surplus electricity that I have.

And so remembering the heady days of spring and summer 2011 with the 12-volt immersion heater that I had made out of an old xylophene drum and a 12-volt heater element and which corroded through while I was in Canada just now, I set to and dismantled it.

I gave the important bits – like the heater element – the once-over to make sure that they still worked (and you would be amazed at how quickly it boils 1.5 litres of water) and then built another heater using a 4-gallon plastic water header tank.

I’m not sure how long the plastic will remain viable, but it should be good for a while anyway. It will hopefully give me hot water in weather like this and I can do my washing.

But all of this got me thinking – and that kind of thing is dangerous.

When I was setting out on the road of doing all of this, I remembered mentioning to someone who I thought was a friend of mine my plans for maybe having a microwave oven here.

A short while later I stumbled across a thread in a newsgroup somewhere where this “friend” and his mates were openly ridiculing my thoughts about this. Of course, such a friendship had to peter out after that.

Nevertheless, I do wonder what this guy and his mates would be saying now when here, in the middle of winter, for the last three days I’ve been running an electric heater up in the attic.

Serve them right.

And what happened to this day off that I was going to have?
