Saturday 13th March 2010 – What a night!

If you remember about a year ago I had a series of nights where I had some really bad attacks of cramp in bed. Last night I had another. I can’t think of anything more painful than that and in stretching my legs out to ease the pain I pulled mycalf muscles -both of them! It took ages for the pain to subside and another age for me to go back to sleep. No wonder I didn’t wake up until after 10:00.

I hope that this isn’t a portent for another series of attacks like last year.

I finally made it off to St Eloy for the shopping and spent quite a few bob there today. LIDL’s gardening sale was ongoing and I bought a 1.5×10-metre roll of black plastic mulching. My new raised beds are to be 1.5×1.5metres so I’ll cut this roll to size, make up a handy framework and use it in winter to keep out the weeds. Carrefour also had a gardening sale so I bought some seeds and a new lopper – €12.99 which is three times the price at LIDL but I hope it lasts 3 times longer. The LIDL ones have a weak spot, the aluminium jaw plate, but these don’t have that – just a simple scissor mechanism.

I popped round to see the European Cardboard Box Mountain that is Claude and Francoise’s apartment to see how they were all doing there, and then the final visit was to the new tyre place. They were advertising Caliburn-sized tyres for €70 each which isn’t too bad a price but by the time they had added on the valves, the balancing, the fitting and the VAT it came to almost €200 for a pair. I’m thinking that I may as well get the Goodyear tyres that were the original fitting seeing as they are only €50 extra for a pair all-in. One thing is certain – I’m not going to waste my snow tyres by running them through the summer. They’ve been invaluable in this weather.

Saturday 31st October 2009 – I had another working day today.

This morning I masked off everywhere in the room and then went off to St Eloy for the shopping. I spent up in LIDL – they were having a musical day so I bought a couple of guitar stands and a guitar tuner.

Also buying a guitar stand was Michael – I haven’t seen him in ages.
“Do you play?” he asked me
“Yes – bass guitar” I replied.
“I’ve started to play electric guitar” he said

So we had quite a chat about guitars and music and other exciting stuff. I told him I was planning to get back on the road, and it turns out that he knows a drummer that lives near to him. He’s going to put me in touch with him
“You can come and join in too” I suggested
“I don’t know enough chords” he replied
“Look – Status Quo toured for 30 years and they only knew three chords!“
“I see what you mean“
I might be on to something here.

At Carrefour my favourite shop assistant (she’s the spitting image of a girl I used to work with) was there. But she’s had her hair cut!
“Who cut it for you?” I asked
“The coiffeur at St Pourcain” she replied
“Doesn’t he like you then?“

Back at home I spent the afternoonpainting attic walls painting, as you can see. Half of the room is done, and I’ve used half of the paint. So it isn’t going to get a second coat any time soon. I’ve brushed it on too rather than rollered it – to make it go farther.

Krys’ suggestion of cream would have been an excellent choice but it’s a bit too late now. Blue will have to do. It’ll get the rest tomorrow and if I run out I can do one of the walls in white.

And while I was up on the ladder doing a complicated bit the blasted phone rang. I scrambled down, lowered the ladder down again and climbed down to the phone but just as I got there the perishing thing stopped ringing.

Once I’d finished the first tub of paint I cleaned myself up a bit and set off for Clotilde’s, who was having a farewell evening before she goes into hibernation at Annemasse. But I must have driven around Lapeize about three times and I couldn’t see her house. Nowhere with plenty of cars parked outside. Even some local yokel couldn’t set me right for her house so after gnashing my teeth I came back home again.

As you know I don’t do “social stuff”. It takes me a whole load of effort to get out of my house but it’s one of the things I need to do so I force myself. But it’s twice now I’ve been to some social event like this where the directions have been … errr …. rather vague and I’ve ended up not going. maybe it’s fate trying to tell me something.

In other news, LIDL has been having a British week and selling loads of traditional British stuff, most of which I imagine has never done anything more British than watch an episode of Coronation Street on satellite TV in some factory in South Korea. One of the things that they have on offer are boxes of Jelly Babies.
And do you know how you can tell which of a box of Jelly Babies are the illegitimate ones/
The answer is really easy.
If you turn the box upside down, all the b@$t@rd$ fall out.

Saturday 29th August 2009 – I WAS UP …

… early this morning. Long before the alarm went off, actually. Not like me, this. But at 08:45 I was on my way to Montlucon for part I of my mega-shop.

Nothing of interest in Carrefour or Vima, and only some new vegan burgers in Amaranthe. But Noz came up trumps again. A copy of an old Donovan album at 1:90 was something, but a triple-pack of Nice CDs at 3:90 was even more exciting – especially as the whole lot was reduced by 50%.

At Auchan I bumped into Rob and Julie and their kids. This was a complete surprise – older readers of my organ at its previous location will recall that it’s usually at Brico Depot that I bump into them. And poor Julie has been quite ill for a few months, although she’s recovering slowly now. That’s nice – I like them and their daughter Ashleigh is quite a big fan of His Nibs.

Brico Depot was exciting. I had two constraints – firstly money and secondly (and more importantly) space inside Caliburn. Interior space was important as I had forgotten to take my ladder with me so I can only reach a very short distance onto the roof-rack to tie stuff on. That stymied me a bit.

But we have the two windows (one of which needs some planing down to fit the hole), some more paint, loads of polystyrene and plenty of wood battens, as well as quite a bit of other stuff. That’ll keep me out of mischief for a week or so and I can go and get another load of stuff next weekend. It’s all very well buying it all in one go but firstly you have to transport it and secondly you have to store it.

I did also pick up a 70x70cm shower base. This was crucial as I’m building the bathroom around the shower and the dimensions need to be worked out fairly soon in my plans. It was the last one in the shop as well so I was quite proud. But as you might expect, as I was walking around the shop it slid off my trolley and smashed into a hundred pieces. Ahh well.

I also went to the “Conforama”. It’s a big furniture shop and it regularly sends out its publicity. Even though it’s only just across the road from the Auchan, in all the years that I’ve lived here I’ve never ever been there, but today I had good reason for going.

They are having a sale on these “click clack” sofas that transform themselves into double beds with a space underneath for storing your bedding. Now, I had one of those in Brussels and I was quite impressed with it for what it was. And so I’ve decided that I want another one to put up in my attic to sit and to sleep on.

The raised bed that I built here works fine but after nearly two years it’s fairly uncomfortable and so I’ve decided to push the boat out and get a really good quality one with a decent mattress. There’s 15% off until the 14th September and delivery is within 3 weeks so if I order it in 2 weeks time it should be ready for when my room is finished. It’s going to be expensive but a good bed is worth its weight in gold.

One problem though is that they don’t do a blue cover – one that will go with my room when I’ve painted it. The assistant who minced over to talk to me talked to me with a lithp, so I was on safe ground talking to him about colour co-ordination and soft furnishings. I suppose I should have profited from the situation to discuss curtains with him.

Talking of beds, tomorrow is Sunday, but no lie-in. A prospective customer wants to come round and talk to me about solar panels. Well, I’ll get out of bed early if there’s a possibility of amounts of folding stuff changing hands in my direction.

And it’s Virlet brocante in the afternoon. Always a good one, that.

Saturday 8th August 2009 – DOESN’T CALIBURN LOOK SMART?

caliburn french number plates les guis virlet puy de dome franceThe postie came by this morning and she dropped off a letter. This was the definitive insurance certificate for Caliburn.

This had Caliburn’s new registration details on it and so I put his new numberplates on him. We’re all legal now.

This means I’ll have to pay more attention to speed limits and the like as I’ll no longer be able to drift past them with “sorry, I’m a foreigner”. But such is life I suppose.

Taking this time out meant that I only put two loads of cement into the wall this morning and that seemed to disappear without trace. I can see me thinking again about my timetable and having a dramatic change of plan.

This afternoon in St Eloy I spent about 33 Euros, but that was due in part to LIDL having brought back into stock their trail mix and crushed nuts and the like, things that I put in my home-made muesli. It’s been out of stock for ages and so I stocked up today just in case this is only a temporary supply.

But the bad news is that the special offer rows are reducing and reducing – looks like the weekly promotions are running out of steam.

And the Carrefour is even worse. Their stock is getting less and less and judging by the length of the queues at the only two checkouts open, the staff is starting to disappear now. I wonder how long this arrangement will continue?

There was a brocante in St Eloy too, and you know how much of a fan I am of French brocantes. But this one had just 10 stalls, some of which were professional overpriced nonsense and the rest were just junk.

Nothing of interest for me so I came home and did some tidying up for my visitor due at 18:00 and who rang me up to say that he would be coming on Tuesday instead. That was that as far as I was concerned and so I came in, had a coffee and looked at the football results.

Crewe Alexandra lost at home to Dagenham and Redbridge, but then I suppose that it’s always difficult when you have to play against two teams at once. But I can see how this season is going to develop and it makes me wish that I’d carried on with the pointing.

Ahhh well.

Saturday 1st August 2009 – Saturday is a sort-of day of rest …

… so I didn’t set the alarm clock this morning.

And when I woke up my mobile phone had gone flat and so I didn’t have a clue about the time, so seeing as I was wide awake I reckoned it was getting on for 10:00 so I hauled myself out of the stinking pit to find that it was 08:15!

After breakfast I went up onto the scaffolding at the side of the house and gave it all a really good soaking in xylophene and then walloped some of the brown staining all over it – nice and thick. That won’t rot away any time soon.

By now it was 11:30 and as there’s not much to eat round here I wandered off into St Eloy and the LIDL and Carrefour. I didn’t meet Bill today (just for a change) and once stocked up (to a value of 20 Euros) I dropped by on George but he was going out so I came home.

In the afternoon I cleaned up my room (you’ve no idea how much rubbish was in here that had gathered over the last 4 weeks) and the verandah so I have places to eat ond cook again. All of this was done to music as I coupled up the hi-fi seeing as the power situation is resolving itself more permanently. Even now at 02:00 I have Lindisfarne going on in the background.

And I noticed on Facebook that Terry was praying for rain. And he got his wish almost as soon as he posted for we had a tropical storm. In 3 hours or so about 17mm of rain fell on here. That’s some going. I’m glad we got the roof on in here beforehand.
