So reading through the Pionsat side it's Matthieu in goal, with Frédéric, Alex, Sébastien and Pierre in defence. Midfield is Nico, Vianney and the two Juliens, and up front are Cedric and Jonathan.

Pionsat open the scoring after about 10 minutes play. It's a beautiful ball out of defence, right over the top of the Enval defenders and two Pionsat players time their run onto the ball with perfection - leaving despairing cries of "offside" in their wake just like Pionsat might do in a similar circumstance.

But there's no reaction from the linesman, no reaction from the referee, and Nico, who has the ball at his feet, sells the keeper a brilliant dummy and then sidefoots the ball into an empty net.

Controversy rages, as you might expect, over the (lack of) offside, but I'm in no position to judge from where I'm standing. In any event, the referee, who is not slow to overrule his linesmen whenever he thinks that he knows better, allows the goal to stand.

But what is nice to see about this move is that for the first time in ages the breakaway player with the ball has some support. I've often criticised the team for not being quick enough to break forward when the team is on the attack, but Jonathan is right up there where he should be.

No controversy about Pionsat's second goal - at least as far as the officials are concerned. Pionsat win a free kick from about 35 yards out and Cedric, for a change from that range (it's usually Pierre who would take them from there) takes the kick.

Cedric shoots the ball right into the penalty area but it's well-covered by the keeper. He gets both hands to the ball to catch it but, unbelievably, the ball goes clean through and into the net. That will give some comfort to Vincent. It happens even to the best goalkeepers.

Now if this had gone in, we would have had a candidate for goal of the season. A marvellous diagonal ball from Pionsat, right across the field, that Nico goes racing after. He hits it on the volley right across the goal to the far post and Vianney launches himself across the goal with a diving header.

The ball goes into the ground right in front of the goal line and bounces up and over the bar. And what a shame that was. An excellent move like that surely deserved a goal.

This new lens that I've recently bought - a 50mm f1.4 with manual focus does have its down side, as you'll see as the season progresses when we'll have more than a few out-of-focus shots, but you can see the advantages in shots like these, especially with the fastest memory card that money can buy. No manipulation at all on this photo, save for a little sharpening.

Meanwhile, the match is rumbling on into something of a controversy with the referee, waving his arms around like someone sending semaphore signals, making a few strange decisions including ordering the linesmen to swap sides and that sort of thing. A referee who clearly likes to be the centre of attention and who will do everything that he can to make sure that he is.

I prefer referees to be unobtrusive and pretty anonymous. There's no place on the field for an extrovert referee. We come to a match to see the game, not him.

We have another situation later in the game as the referee overrules his linesman to award a throw-in to Enval, the ball having run along the line for a few yards.

THis happened right in front of where I was standing, so I bellowed (as is my wont) "the WHOLE of the ball has to cross the WHOLE of the line!"
He comes across to me and says "I suppose you'd like to run the line, would you?"
to which I reply "well, I could do a better job than you, I reckon!".
The referee then piddles off to the far touchline and that's the last we see of him down this side of the field. Nothing like livening up the action on a Saturday night.

Returning to the game, which, after all, is why we are here, Pionsat concede a free kick about 25 yards out from goal. It was a tackle by Cedric which, to be honest, nearly took the left leg off the Enval player.

The ball is floated into the Enval area and a header beats Matthieu completely and clangs off the crossbar and away. That was as close as Enval have been to the Pionsat goal so far.

But with about 10 minutes left in the game, Enval do pull a goal back. It's a long kick out of goal by the Enval keeper and the ball reaches the Pionsat penalty area. Matthieu calls out to Alex to "leave it" and so Alex leaves it, but Matthieu doesn't quite reach the ball quickly enough and the Enval n°14 reaches the ball first.

Yes, a bit of a mix-up there in the defence. If Matthieu had been a little quicker off his line - if Alex, instead of leaving the ball, had shepherded it back to Matthieu to block off the n°14 - still, it wasn't a vital goal and the team will work out a much better understanding as the season develops. It's nice, at least, to hear the players talking to each other. They need to do it more often.

So last week at Servant we had two goals out of nothing, this week we have another two. We're still a little short at the cutting edge, especially since Jérême has moved to Auxerre, but Matthieu might be fit again in a week or two and we'll have to see what happens then. But the squad is looking a little threadbare this season and I'd still love to see a powerful, commanding centre-half on the field in the purple-and-white.
