2nd XI v US ST GERVAIS
11th SEPTEMBER 2010
Having had a day off last weekend Pionsat's 2nd XI get under way this evening with a match against hated local rivals St Gervais who were surprisingly relegated from the 1st Division last season.
I'd been away on a course today so I missed almost all of the first half. And I had also forgotten my dictaphone so instead of the copious notes that you almost always have, you'll have to make do this evening with a few abbreviations scribbled onto the back of an old envelope or whatever.
It seems that they had been waiting for me to turn up so that the action could take place - nothing much of any note had happened in the first half. But the second half opens with something of a calamity.
St Gervais win a corner on the left touchline and float a high ball in. François rises up to punch the ball away and he punches it ... right into the back of one of his own players, and it rebounds into the net despite his despairing attempt to grab it. Talk about a goal out of nothing .....
A short while later Pionsat go further behind. St Gervais break down the right wing and beat the offside trap with some ease. The winger puts a low ball into the centre of the penalty area, where there's a simple tap-in.
Now does anyone recognise the St Gervais no12 in this photo? It is in fact one of the guys who played for Pionsat last season. He's moved on to pastures new in the hope of breaking into St Gervais' first team who play in the elite leagues.
And just to prove that football is indeed a funny old game, Pionsat pull a goal back which also comes out of nothing. It's a high ball over the top of the defence which doesn't look as if it is causing anyone any concern at all. The keeper shouts for the ball ... and then completely misses it. Totally astonishing.
It's even more totally astonishing when you recollect that unless I am very much mistaken this is the same keeper who had such an outstanding game against Pionsat's 1st XI last season.
It's never very good to start the season with a defeat - and a defeat at home as well. But Pionsat played quite well from what I saw even though there was a certain lightness in the attack. They will need to work on this for the forthcoming season.
And what do you think about Pionsat's new outfit? I was totally taken in at first by this. But apparently Pionsat planned to start the match in their traditional violet top but the referee deemed that it would clash with the dark blue of St Gervais under what passes for floodlighting in this part of the world. And as there was no other top available, they donned white training bibs over the top.
