BLOT L'EGLISE v 1st XI
5th SEPTEMBER 2010
The 1st XI get under way today here at Blot l'Eglise - a ground that I haven't visited until today.
They won promotion from Division 2 last season, apparently winning their pool at something of a canter and conceding only 6 goals in the process. We could well be in for a tight match today.
And as Pionsat are warming up I notice a couple of new players in the ranks. There are two young guys in the side, one who will be playing at full-back and the other one will be on the bench. But once more the injury bug has struck in pre-season with both Gregory and Nico (and probably a couple of others too) on the sidelines.
It's Pionsat however that open the scoring. This new full-back is combining well with Cedric down the inside-right position and between them they play the ball forward, passing the ball out to the wing and back inside a couple of times.
The ball reaches one of the other Pionsat forwards who rides three or four challenges to take the ball forward into a good position. With the defence out of position he passes the ball inside where Matthieu Sikorski is waiting in acres of space and he curls the ball round the keeper into the net.
A few minutes later Pionsat nealy double their lead. They win a free kick on the left side of the field and the ball is floated into the penalty area. One of the Blot defenders rises to the ball and heads it well clear.
It travels about 25 yards and falls to this new right-back playing for Pionsat. He catches it on the volley and launches a screamer into the area, and it doesn't go over the bar by very much.
The keeper had it well-covered as you can see, but it was one of those shots that look quite impressive from the touchline.
Pionsat put the ball in the net a short while later from some neat play between Matthieu and Pierre down the left wing. One of them - it may well have been Matthieu but I'm not sure about that - rolls the ball into the net past the outstretched arm of the Blot goalkeeper who is stranded.
But Damien who is running the line down this side has his flag up for offside and so it doesn't count.
Cedric, who is having an excellent game today, does some good work down the inside left position with a couple of neat one-twos with Fabrice and Christophe who has come on as sub. He breaks down the wing going forwards but a Blot defender intercepts him and puts the ball out for a corner.
The ball comes from the corner and it's a grubber. It rolls right along the ground right through a crowded penalty area and strangely enough no-one is in a position to put a foot on the ball. It reaches Christophe standing on the far post and, unbelievably, from a range of just a couple of yards, he stabs it wide of the post.
He stands there with his head in his hands in total disbelief. Ahh well - such is football.
But the game's not over yet. There's a good ball over the top of a rather static defence and this puts the Blot no7 through into some clear space. He brushes off a tackle from Fabrice, cuts inside, and puts in a shot right across goal.
François is struggling for that but luckily for Pionsat the ball goes a foot or two wide of the post. But it was a close thing.
And so that's the first match out of the way and we start with an away win, which is always good news. Blot's defence looked quite good even if it was a little static at times, but the midfield was just ordinary and they offered little up front until Pionsat's defence had to reorganise when Yann was carried off injured. I think that they may well be another team that finds the step-up rather difficult to climb as the season wears on.
As for Pionsat, they played well today and the two new players on the field fitted in quite well with the good team spirit that exists at the club. But Yann's injury left them short (in both senses of the word) in defence and if they could find a really powerful central defender who would dominate the defence as much as Cedric dominates the attack, then their aspirations of stepping up a division into the Elite leagues would be much more realistic.
